So apple just announced that the emoji is coming to iOS via an update. I don’t really like the emoji. It is weird.

Under the hood, I bet this is how it works:
You have person emojis: Man, Woman, etc.
You have a control character that applies a property to the character right before and/or after it. This is how Emoji currently allows for any person Emoji to have any skin colour, and how you can create arbitrary families with whatever person Emojis you want.
Therefore, this probably isn’t a brand new Emoji. It’s probably two characters like this: [man][pregnant modifier]. Just that the pregnant modifier can be applied to any person, not just women.

It‘s marketing. You would have to be a fool to really think apple (or any big company for that matter) actually gives a flying f*ck about minority representation. It‘s an advertising ploy to provoke an emotional reaction in it‘s viewers - be it good or bad - which helps with the distribution of their corporate brand.
And obviously it was successful…
I feel old even writing this, but I miss the „good old days“ where sending a smile to someone you liked was a simple „:-)“, not the spawn of a corporate marketing campaign.

All this bullshit about emojis, just because someone feels excluded because there is no emoji for their “identity” is just nonsense. All of a sudden, emojis were no longer allowed to be just yellow, but had to have a skin color. Children, LGTBQ+, or other emojis came, just so no one would feel pissed off. What would everyone do if emojis were just 2 or 3 characters again?
I think explicitly gendered emojis are due to have different varieties, but imagine if we added hair to 😒.
I do agree with the skin color, why? No one is that color.
This is the main issue for me too. The problem is not the emoji itself, it’s the fact that someone was offended enough to get this thing done. We live in the society of the permanently offended, where everyone needs to be pleased or “something terrible” might happen.
The emoji is not an issue, the issue is that there was someone who felt the need to have this (or many other emojis) created to cater to someone else’s “needs”.

Today it is men. What next, animals? Spare me from the pregnant polar bear and dog emojis. I do not care too much about it, as it is just another emoji among 500 other Unicode ones, but the trend is a bit concerning and a funny joke dragged out IMHO.
To get the message out, things like a meme picture of a female version of Ernest Khalimov needs to be spammed to feminists. Or maybe those anorexic models ones too. They will tell you how inappropriate that should be, and that can be used to gauge how much inappropriate this emoji should be.
