Just wanted to throw my experience out from this morning in case it’s helpful for anyone else. I’ll try to update with whatever happens ✌️
I applied for an expedited passport for foreign travel. All my documents are and have been updated to reflect correct name and sex, including my birth certificate. Unfortunately my passport from 15 years ago is not. I get called up, the lady at the counter is confused and asked for my divorce or marriage certificate, continues to fumble through my documents until she catches my previous passport and figures it out. She sends me to a window and I’m told that I need to sit tight while she talks with her supervisor. Eventually she comes back and tells me that “everything is a complete mess right now and nobody knows what to do with the current executive order.” She recognizes that my “birth sex” is legally female, but they need to have their legal team review everything and she will call me later.
I was hesitant to leave because I know how easy it is for things to fall into the bureaucratic black hole that is the US government. To my surprise she did call me a few hours later and reiterated everything was a mess, but they could issue me a new passport with “M” sex marker like my old one without an issue if I wanted. Otherwise I would need to sit tight because nobody knows what to do and legal is basically telling them to sit on all applications with a sex marker change until higher-ups can set some concrete policies. I did politely tell her I would rather have my money back than a false document 🤷♀️
Idk y’all. I’m lucky to live in a mostly blue state, but am disappointed in myself that I didn’t deal with my passport when I did all of my other documents. Ultimately time will tell I guess? If you’re dealing with the same thing, please share (misery loves company and all). Stay safe all
