I’ve been doing feature checking for a couple of weeks now, and Friendica seems to be most compatible with… well, everything. The default interface is kind of clunky, though, and less than intuitive. Misskey interface I like the most, and it seems to connect to most things (not Lemmy or diaspora, though). Nice community, too. Pleroma is turning out to be the most redundant of all these, and Mastodon is just the basic workhorse without many fancy bits. There’s also GNU Social, but… Meh.

Since the Fediverse is made up of a network of independant servers, as long as they follow the same protocol for communicating with eachother they will be connected, regardless of what software they use. Mastodon, Misskey and Pleroma all use the Mastodon API to communicate. They are different in ways that would be significant to admins and users of the instance running them, but not to other instances, so just pick one you like and stick with it.

I personally prefer Misskey because it just has emoji reactions instead of likes, and because the UI is very pretty

Test all you want and then choose the best for you. Or keep using all of them if you wish. By the way, yes, it’s kinda redundant.

I agree with the spirit but also a little reminder that if you want to use these apps on your smartphone we have a limited support for good foss stuff.

Due to some let’s say petty ideological disagreements, a lot of Pleroma servers are blocked by Mastodon servers, so depending on who you want to communicate with a separate Pleroma account might be needed.

Is there anywhere I can find out more info on the Mastodon - Pleroma schism? This is the first I’m hearing of it.

Technically there is no schism, but people on many Mastodon servers are a bit trigger happy with instance bans when those instances federate with other instances that are deemed ban worthy. And Pleroma instance operators typically are not so trigger happy and thus even if their instance is well moderated they get banned for not banning others preemptively.

That said, some of the instances in question really do deserve to be defederated, so both sides have some reasonable arguments…

some instances also block pleroma instances that use soapbox fe. their reason is because the dev is terf so users must also be terf

/edit learned something new.

It’s up to you. They are all connected, but you could still have 3 accounts. You could even have 4 ;)

@ @MadScientist@sopuli.xyz I know very little about misskey. Why should someone use misskey over like mastodon?

I can’t see your comment on my instance

I really like the look of its default web frontend. The UI is also uniquely customizable so you can do a lot of cool stuff with it. It has cool widgets and stuff too.

I also like how instead of likes you only have emoji reactions, so interactions are much more meaningful instead of mindlessly pressing the like button on everything. Likes from people on mastodon and such are turned into the star emoji, so it still connects well.

There’s also the drive, which is suuuper useful. basically you have your own little storage space to keep some files, and whenever you want to share them you can do so directly from the drive instead of reuploading each time. it’s best for easily resusing memes. It also has facebook-style albums with this but i very rarely use that.

lastly there’s antennas, which are very customizable feeds. like you can have the default followed feed, plus a separate antenna for personal stuff from your friends, plus another one for news. i don’t really use antennas though because i don’t have many people to follow in the first place, so don’t really need to separate them.

i love that misskey tries to innovate and add new features that make social media a better experience, instead of just doing “twitter but with freedom” like other fediverse software. even if twitter itself became federated, open source, and completely freed from corporate shackles, i’d still stick with misskey, and i think that’s the kind of platform that will really get people to switch.

I like to see new ideas instead of copy-paste centralized counterparts, it would be nice to read more detailed comparison between Fediverse apps. I’ve also read good stuff on Pleroma since (looks like) it maintain high quality on media uploads.

some different features, but well, it’s all pretty similar (all for microblogging). I hate managing different accounts so I just use one. just use what you like the most. you can follow everyone still.

Depends on requirements and what you’re happy to manage.
