I know, it’s oxymoronic that this community even exists.

RealPrivacy is a community for sharing any information that’s far down the ‘privacy iceberg’. In other words, genuine privacy focused discussion without loyalty in any direction. Privacy is the only mantra. OPSEC is included in the privacy umbrella.

Other privacy communities are likely better for the vast majority of conversations. In fact, many of my own conversations I would class as belonging to another community. If you’re not contributing in genuinely useful ways, you should post elsewhere, please. We’re all silly at times, nobody is judging you for your post history, since we as the RealPrivacy community will always be confident that the info within it is high-quality in at least its effort, but even more importantly, its substance. Regardless of your activity outside of this community.

The idea behind this community is also to allow for discussions that would normally be had in much more anonymized places, both on and off the internet. It is hard to find a community without irrational loyalty, fear, assumptions - but these are antithetical to this community.

Don’t be afraid to post. Don’t be afraid of corrections. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You don’t need to have the perfect solution (it doesn’t exist), you don’t need to be an expert at everything, there are no stupid questions as long as they’re sincere and in the spirit of the community.

Here, facts and statistics reign supreme.

Don’t break the lemmy.ca instance rules. You’re responsible for whatever you post outside of that.

I’m not using a burner, are you? Self-censorship is a sign of oppression and fear of those that govern you. Are you worried about who governs you? While the topic is privacy, this community is by its nature, not private. Please keep that in mind when you’re choosing to share information.

I don’t want to be the sheriff, we can either coexist under a common understanding of the spirit here, or this community doesn’t exist. I will obviously have to moderate to a basic degree and would be willing to consider others along the way if they align with the vision. If you don’t want to be here, you’re always free to leave. Please assume everyone’s words are sincere, genuine, and kind-hearted. We co-operate, or we falter. Purely for content moderation purposes, please use English other than in exceptional circumstances. I do not advertise this group in any way, there are reasons to use other privacy related communities, and one is not necessarily better than the other depending on your goals in the moment.

Also, we’re not privacy-mad robots, you can be human. Let’s not make it weird, fellas.

Let’s mix the kind heart of Wendel with the passion of Steve Burke and the effort of Linus Torvalds. Substitute whoever you want, the point is the spirit.

A Canadian-run community, geared towards Canadians, but all are welcome!

Welcome 🍁

Lemmy.ca is run by Canadians, hosted in Canada, and geared toward Canadians. However, it is not restricted to Canadians, or Canadian culture/topics/etc. All are welcome!

To learn more about what Lemmy is, or how the Fediverse works, you can visit our simple Getting Started Guide.

This site is run by the non-profit Fedecan and funded entirely by user donations. You can help support us by visiting our donations page.

Rules and Guidelines

1. No Bigotry

Including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia.

2. Be Civil

Argue in good faith, attack the argument; not the person, and promote a healthy debate. That includes implying violence, threats or wishes of violence and/or death.

3. No Porn

This instance is not made to host porn communities. You’re free to access porn communities on other instances through your account, but be mindful of Rule 4.

4. Use the NSFW tag

Use your common sense: if you wouldn’t want this image to show up on your work computer, tag it as such. In comments, use the :::spoiler ::: tag for NSFW images, and put a NSFW mention beside links. Do not use NSFW images as your avatar or banner.

5. No Ads / Spam

This instance is not there to act as your billboard. If you want to promote your personal work, at least make the effort to be a contributing member of this community. Your account purpose shouldn’t be to only advertise, make it natural.

6. Bot account

If you are the operator of a “bot” account, make sure to flag is as such in the account’s settings.

7. Right to privacy

Do NOT distribute the personal information of someone else without their consent (aka doxxing). Information that is public domain can be shared, provided it is in good faith.
ex: The official email of an elected official is fair, the private phone number or the real name of a non-public person is NOT.

8. Report abuse

The report function isn’t labelled the disagree button. You might not agree with someone, but that doesn’t mean what the person says is against the rules. Using it repeately in this fashion will lead to actions being taken against the reporter.

9. Impersonation

Don’t make an account with the intent to negatively deceive or defame someone on the fediverse.
ex: Parody of a famous person is okay, submitting outrageous content as appearing like another user, mod or admin isn’t.
