Here’s what makes this whole thing absurd
The ban in question was a 3-day ban from r/youll_be_banned which is a subreddit where getting banned is literally part of its punchline. You make a post, you get banned if the mods are in a bad mood, and that’s just the joke
Why on earth would I try to circumvent such a short ban, from that subreddit of all subreddits?
Still, it doesn’t change that I’ve been accused by the automated system, even for something that I did not do
Right after I got that message about the sitewide ban, I panicked and sent a half-baked appeal explaining that I had zero intent. Of course that appeal got rejected because I didn’t explain the context above. You could tell from the wording itself that I was still experiencing the shock of it all
And, well there is a page allowing me to send my second appeal. I’m just scared of it getting rejected again somehow
I think in the meantime, I’m just gonna stop shouting into the void and reach out here to you guys, just to talk it over. It’s been 11 days since the ban, and I’ve been a little depressed about it
Does anyone want to share their experiences?
Edit: Submitted my second appeal which says:
My 3-day ban was from r/youll_be_banned, where bans are part of the joke. I didn’t intentionally evade it. Please review the specific activity behind my permanent suspension; my first appeal lacked context.
Wish me luck, even if my luck is low. If they still don’t hear it, oh well I guess
Get off Reddit dude, only bots and Nazis left anyway
I’ve been banned on reddit so many times I’ve gotten the ‘permanent’ ban message for the last 4 or so. That place changed. It’s very intolerant and has no sense of humor. My first account was 11 years old at the time of first banning. After that first ban, I probably got banned every year for many years running.
No sense of humor. No sense of proportion. No sense that this is an anonymous internet forum.
It’s so much kinder here. People help you learn, rather than ridicule you for being wrong. Stay, help build this little tree fort into something grand, friend.
This place really is growing on me

Been perma banned three times for challenging right wing views- been using Lemmy for a year now and haven’t looked back. I do miss the vast archive of data that formed Reddit but now that AI models are stealing all its data, I don’t see a bright future for it other than a gathering of bot accounts spreading nefarious agendas
They report spam anything that challenges their views. It’s a broken windows type of strategy. Content mods will see a bunch of reports accumulated against you and assume you must be a problematic account.
Reddit fuckin’ sucks man. I ate a permanent ban in a comment chain where some people were being weird about Pizza Cake (popular comic artist if you’re unaware, people on reddit are extremely weird about her) accusing her of misandry or something, and I said “omg she should be sentenced to death! Do you goobers even hear yourselves?”. Ban reason was inciting violence.
I appealed, twice, and the second was actually successful, but through some technical glitch, they never actually unbanned me and I couldn’t appeal it again because it was already “successful.”
The thing that really fucking sucked was that I was right in the middle of a fundraiser for charity, and a lot of that money was raised on reddit. I eventually got my account actually reinstated by asking on an alt account on a weekly askreddit thread run by an admin, but like six weeks later, absolutely sucked to lose all that momentum.
Honestly I don’t understand what’s going on with reddit! I got banned by mistake once, and reddit asked me to update my email and password. But even after I did, the ban still wasn’t lifted!
that change your password seems to be intentional by reddit to confirm thier ban against you.(they probably want to tie it to your email address)
It gets worse every year too. I feel like I’m constantly running into terrible content but people who are generally harmless get banned forever for sarcasm.
most of its AI driven bots anyways.
That too!
Of course that appeal got rejected because I didn’t explain the context above.
The repeal was rejected because they’re never not rejected.
I posted info on effective ban evasion https://lemmy.world/post/52856407 , so far so good. IP address is by far the highest hurdle to clear these days, because of the crackdown on spammers. The universal weak spot with IPs is cell phones. It’s too complicated to lock phone numbers to IPs since cell phones constantly move around, but I’m sure they would love to do this and might some day find a way to make it happen. But until that happens, it’s the only back door, outside of paying good money for clean domestic IPs in your own timezone.
Reddit is fighting ban evaders with the same fire they used to go after bot networks, and probably losing a lot of valid, well meaning users in the process.
they recently tried to force logins because too many people were lurking afraid of getting banned, plus OPENAI stopped using the site too. new device, new browser is the easiest way to go back on reddit.
they are getting good at blocking the spammers(the one drives traffic to thier own online businesses, or sometimes of accounts). i dont think it actually stops them though, im on another forum where they talk about this very thing, they can produce enough accounts ,devices, thier own browser setup to evade it constantly, or eventually. i dont think they go after propaganda bots though.
I tried anti finger printing, which is like the same as using the device, and that works fine. I think what was the setting me back was not using a clean IP, and not using a mainstream email provider.
I found out that if you use the cell phone IP with anti-fingerprinting like the brave browser, and he’s a fresh email account through Gmail or Hotmail, youre pretty much in the clear from the get-go.
i waited a whole year and was gauging reddits bans, they leveled off like last year, because they realize they were banning too much people, which would generated content for ai scraping. i dont use mobile for reddit anymore, except for lurking. i use librewolf as the desktop browser, since its a new browser i never used with reddit.
its harder if you are spammer for your “business/income” they catch on faster that way. even these people started to produce "organic human behaviour, which serves reddits purpose, to not illicit the filtering. i stay away from all the large subs though, as long you are not a serial evader, you have to wait quite awhile before making a new account.
Maybe they will start profiling cell service IPs, but so far I’ve been in the clear with them. I think spam / proxy IP database lookups is weighing heavily in reddit’s profiling. Using Claude I cam up with a reasonably seamless way to have Firefox and Brave on my home PC use my phone’s data connection instead of my cable IP, which is very very static and long blacklisted.
reddit is definitely doing that, for people who are spamming thier own businesses. i created an account after a year of getting shadowbanned, from brave, i think what set it off during early last year, when i was using brave, reddint dint notice, but when i switched to a different browser they immediately shadowbanned the now deleted account. as long as you have different IP/device, and browser you are in the clear. the spammers i was talking about have multiple devices(phones) so they can do the spamming. i only use the phone to lurk now and on desktop i avoid any of the problematic subs.
They probably can’t profile cell IPs because the collateral damage would be too great.
That’s shitty. I know everyone here hates reddit but it still sucks losing something you’ve spent a lot of time enjoying. A lot of people here deal with that by being angry at reddit. That’s OK too.
I don’t even feel angry. Just straight up sad
Like, I feel as if I’ve just lost everything that made the internet fun. My niche interests just feel so lonely now, my connection to a huge pool of advisors just… gone
Dude that sucks. I’m sorry. This place is growing but it’s definitely not there yet. Losing that access to knowledge really sucks.
