I absolutely don’t want to hear how Liverpool are lucky or how Salah is carrying them when we are performing like this. When we needed reinforcement and the ownership decides not to do anything. It’s not good enough.
I think you’re looking at it too simplistically. The issue is the owners but it’s not that they’re not doing anything, it’s that they’re not doing the right things.
Our club was in the doldrums for a number of reasons and according to reports, Arteta managed to come with a presentation they could get on board with. It would not only provide them glory, but also profit.
They signed up and invested and as a result, things began turning around. However the reality is that we’re close, but not over the finish line.
Now the owners are happy. The club is self sustainable and competing and that’s ultimately what they want.
However the fans are in a whole other mindset and the problem is that it doesn’t sit in reality.
Just two windows ago we were on the verge of breaching FFP. We went into last summer with £150 million to spend and our targets weren’t available. Now you’re thinking get other targets. But that FFP issue is the issue, because for example Josh apparently pushed for Watkins towards the end of the window, however this was with the understanding that Sesko or whoever wouldn’t happen in the summer. Given that we need a striker, a winger and a midfielder on top of Zubimendi, can we afford to make stop-gap purchases whilst so close? We’re comfortably second, we’re not fighting for a Champions League place.
So what should the owners do? To be honest, cheat. That’s the difference. City pretend they have new sponsorships and partnerships and all we do is raise prices on the fans. We genuinely need a cash injection that keeps us on the right side of FFP and believe it or not, not spending brings us closer to where we wanna be.
Arteta is as frustrated as the rest of us. He wanted to maximise every window and that was the promise and he had and he gave. But missing Edu, it was even more out of reach.
All I can say is, let’s see how the next window goes. Because if the club can’t do something magical then, it’s never gonna happen.
