I find the colours really distracting. I’ve tried using those Greasemonky / user scripts but I suspect Safari doesn’t permit them to address the favicons, because they don’t work.
I also would like the extension icons to be monochrome. Anybody knowledgeable enough to say whether there’s an API that allows this kind of thing?

You might consider reaching out to dev Jeff Johnson to ask if he knows. He codes the StopTheMadness extension and would be likely to know Safari APIs as well as just about anyone.
