The Limelight was an amazing experience. It was a converted old cathedral with the main room being the big dance floor. But there were other rooms; the chapel was another dancefloor, but it was often a more chill music vibe. The altar and tabernacle were the main stage. The main room DJ was in an elevated transept opposite of where clubgoers got their first sight of the club interior.

The layout, the sound, the lighting, partying until 0500 (even though the club was supposed to close at 0400)… all an experience that was exceptional and is exceptionally rare among modern nightclubs. The Palladium, NASA, The Tunnel… All in the same vein. So many “oh, wow, remember when [some band before they were signed] used to open there?” acts that went big. Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Dee-lite, Lords of Acid, etc.

Unless you personally experienced one of the super clubs, it is difficult to convey the sheer scale of the operation. It’s like trying to describe the Vegas Strip to someone who has never been or only gone to one of the shitty off-strip also-rans.

Tony Fletcher was my favorite resident DJ at Limelight and deeply inspired my DJ career and style. He was and still is an excellent music industry author. His is a prolific writer and, in addition to his books, his regular writings can be found here: https://substack.com/@tonyfletcher.
