Once you realise that they all think we have less than 10 years to the total collapse of civilisation, everything they do makes sense.

How does it make any sense whatsoever? Musk, Bezos, Zuck, etc already have more money than they can spend even if they were all to live a full life. Helping bring on the collapse of civilization would just reduce their power and control over us.
If you’re saying that they believe it will collapse regardless of what they do, then they’d probably behave more like Gabe Newell and live their life by hopping from one yacht to another somewhere out in the ocean.
I think they are the ones in charge of making sure the divide and conquer game is played through till the end. Ensure we keep downvoting each other at first, and later killing each other is their highest and most cost effective way of managing an 8 billion large size of violent cattle.
(This comment only works if y’all massively downvote this, so go for it)
This. Hording wealth that loses its value in 10 years makes no sense.
I think it’s one of those things that when you see it you can’t unsee it.
It’s heavily tied to whether you are looking at actual climate and resource data or just following the day to day shenanigans.
I’ve tried to offer a bit more context in a different response a bit lower, but I’d say the best thing to do is go get engaged in conversation with people who are seeing it.
As far as I can tell there is a part of the population that simply doesn’t want to see this either. On Lemmy it seems to be around 20% but I think the overall population is probably closer if not over 60%. It’s a really full on realisation and reality shifting experience for people who have done everything by the book, went to university, bought the house, did the making kids thing, paying mortgages, watch the tv shows and talk about the tv shows to people at “parties”.
It’s hard to have that whole American Dream paradigm fall apart.
not if they hoard the resources that money represents
To a degree, but they need a heavy industrial base to operate from and continue to produce resources. They dont have that.
Most of their resources come from contracts and conventions. When those shatter, they dont have any wealth past what they tangibly have in goods. Since opulent wealth like yaughts and fine wine require civilization to exist, they are unlikely to maintain that position in the collapse of society. Best casecfor them is a well stickef bunker and a wealthy, isolated life. They all have that, but only that.
The OPs statement isn’t likely. What’s more likely is that realize this is a change to enact a second gilded age, a full oligarchy where the rich rule explicitly. They are striking now that the groundwork has been laid and an weak president is in office that will welcome it.
isnt that precisely the point op is making?
i doubt societal collapse will put everyone on equal footing to grab at power, the billionaires still control our food production and all the basics we need for survival.
they may lose their yatches, but i doubt they arent planning on a different form of control.
why else would they grab and jerk the wheel of power so vigorously like this? i think they expect capitalism to collapse due to climate change or something and are pivoting to something else…
The gilded age is about absolute control of the current society, not a post apocalypse hellscape. It is about establishing a US kleptocracy ala Russia. Its about reaping all the current richness of American resources into their pockets directly, about replacing people with whatever robot is possible until you have literal wage slaves.
It will cause a reckoning, but they think they can control some semblance of the current nation, not the aftermath of a destroyed “total collapse” American that OP is talking about.
they are trying to make themselves rulers before the “apocalypse”. this is what they seem to be jumping the gun on.
i say this because fascism is used by capitalists to assert control, but there wasnt strong pushback to justify it. they are smarter than they make it look like and seem to be planning ahead.
they already do this, not just in the US… thats why everyone else is struggling, its not like our work is valueless, its that value is already being siphoned to oligarchs pockets.
They want control over everything to the very end. If these people were going to be satisfied with fucking off and enjoying their wealth, we wouldn’t even know their names.
