It’s a possibility I hadn’t considered to be honest, but it seems a bit far-fetched (though not at all unlikely)

He spent the last 8 years talking about tariffs on China and how China is an existential threat, etc etc. I don’t think he’d be able to run a con this long and this deep.

He spent his first term fighting off Russiagate and impeachment and he seemed extremely frustrated by the whole ordeal. Implicating himself in an actually illegal scheme like this would be too stupid even for him.

I can believe that people in his close circle (cabinet members, advisors, prominent supporters like Elon Musk) are very likely running insider trading through intermediates.

I could see Trump using these people as his own intermediate for insider trading, or even letting them profit and getting political support in exchange.

I still think the prime motivator behind the tariffs is to wage an economic war on China, while turning US “allies” and other dependents into economic vassals.

“Illegal” doesn’t mean anything when it comes to these sums of money. And as the head of the regime he can do whatever he wants without “legal” troubles too, as has been shown before. So the only problem is who would he anger by this and who’s support he has, which with the ammount they have likely been making are a lot richer and more supportive than before.

I think this would be too much for both the US public and the US politicians. Yeah, impeaching means nothing, but it can lead into actual legal issues after his term.

I think this is the Dems grasping whatever they can to make trouble.

It sounds believable, if you simplify Trump into greed and stupidity. But the only evidence is a tweet he made. He’s an impulsive man, and could be, he thought he could stop the stock market plunge a bit.
