Honk, honk, honnnk!
Going to be there tonight. Let’s go!
Okay I’m less upset about blowing the lead now.
Hill Country closed! Found out the hard way.
Man so many restaurants have closed in Chinatown. Even before the pandemic…
Could be just closed on Mondays? Hopefully…
Okay. One more period tonight, guys.
I like how they’re playing. I was worried after the last few weeks, but it seems they came ready to play.
Okay so the last 10 of regulation wasn’t good. But Ovi got the overtime winner. On to Wednesday!
McMichael is flying these first four minutes.
Seems like everyone is flying.
Why was that chop block on Carlson during the power play not a penalty?!
That might have been blatant enough to be one of those where they’ll hand us a terrible make-up call next period so that everyone gets to be mad.
The ref saw it from 15’ away and decided it wasn’t a penalty. I don’t understand it. He explained it to Carlson, who didn’t buy the explanation.
I honestly think NHL reffing is absurdly hard and I imagine that there’s an instinct to not reverse decisions you’ve already made. Not as an “I don’t want to admit to being wrong” thing, but as “I need to be 100% sure because reversing a correct call looks 10x worse than making a wrong call”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a play and thought “that’s a penalty”, watch the replay and think “that’s 100% a penalty”, watch the super slo-mo and ooh okay maybe not. There’s gonna be a a spot where you think odds are very high I was wrong but I still don’t want to risk the small chance of overturning something I had right initially.
Like for as much as everyone likes to shit-talk how much the refs get obvious calls wrong, I can’t see myself having anywhere close to the accuracy they do on obvious calls right in front of me if I’m also trying to simultaneously keep my eye out for things happening in other areas of the ice.
Oh yeah it’s not an easy job. And people boo them as soon as they come on the ice.
They did overturn that double minor for high sticking late in regulation, and it was the correct call. I also didn’t disagree with the tripping penalty against the Caps that led to Montreal’s first goal - but they called that after several no calls of a more serious nature, it seemed:
- The hit on Carlson
- Eller getting mugged by two guys seems like interference to me - and how many Canadiens were on the ice involved in the play at that moment?
- That cross check during the TV timeout that knocked over one of our guys (I didn’t see who).
I don’t think many disagreed with the trip itself, the irritation was that it was called after so much more was allowed.
And what was going on with the faceoffs? When almost every face off had players thrown out or had to be redone, it seems likely the issue isn’t the players…
