Speed cameras do not save lives.

Reducing speed saves lives. That is better accomplished by more intelligent road design than a system that may be disabled, requires specific conditions, can be obscured, and relies on consequences issued a substantial time past the infringing event.

Narrower, winding roads with plants close to the lane edges will have an immediate effect on slowing traffic. Slapping a camera on a 6 lane throughway and dropping the speed limit by 5-10mph will do jack shit aside from make the municipality more money.

A good speeding camera will only take imagery when the radar/lidar detects a speeding incident, which makes it different from an ALPR that takes pictures constantly and can be used to track folks who aren’t actively breaking the law for the sake of tracking them. That being said, there is a bit of a “trust me, bro” aspect to that part of the system design, so I do get the distrust

Spy cameras are bad. However, police arbitrarily enforcing the law is also really bad. So is no enforcement at all. So I’m not sure what’s the least bad.

Maybe as the other person said a camera system that only records the minimum information, and can’t be used for other purposes.

11 - you don’t ever really need a car to go beyond 80 mph
12 - manufacturers can actually cap vehicle speed by design but choose not to
