Feature Request:

One of the biggest issues I have with navigating this site is the slowness for me, sometimes taking up to a minute just for the site to load in the first place, I don’t know if it is a routing issue to Brasil, but this happens constantly and multiples times a day, with images being the worst part, sometimes taking several minutes to load. I have tested multiple ISPs and DNS providers but there was no difference, currently I use Quad9 DNS, but I think JPEG-XL would at least help mitigate this issue while also providing benefits for the site as a whole.

With Firefox 158 and Chrome 155, JPEG-XL support is finally enabled by default on all major browsers, it would be great if Hexbear could enable support for uploading and displaying JPEG-XL images, Lemmy should already support it. Additionally, all images uploaded to the site could also be automatically converted to JPEG-XL as that would help save space on the server it is hosted and allow it’s features to work on all new images, like progressive loading for example. The same could be done to GIFs since JPEG-XL also supports motion and converting the emojis to it could help with their loading since the emoji picker also loads very slowly on this site whenever I want to comment.

This site shows comparisons and general info about JPEG-XL and this one is a test page for your browser.

Bug Report:

When making a post that is a youtube video, the site is supposed to extract the video title, thumbnail and description automatically, but for a while now it doesn’t. I usually just copy and paste the title directly from the video and manually point to a thumbnail at https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEOID/maxresdefault.jpg so it is displayed on the site. It’s been this way for so long that I don’t remember the last time it worked here, but I do remember this working correctly when I was still on Lemmygrad before coming here.

Also a question, is there any technical reason why the UI is currently 4 versions behind the backend? And the backend is also one version behind the latest being 0.19.20, or it is just that no one has had time yet to update it?
