Hello, I really like bubbles.town and would like to start voting for entries.

I tried logging in with the sh.itjust.works instance, but I get the error message above.

Maybe I didn’t type things right? Are there settings I have to enable somewhere? I’m not so familiar with instances and their inter compatibility.

I’m using an updated Fulguris browser on mobile.

Below is what I entered:

Edit: wrong 2and pic, now it’s the right one.

Haven’t heard of bubbles.town before, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I notice that Lemmy is not explicitly listed as one of the login options. I tried the sh.itjust.works, lemmy.zip, and lemmy.world, and got the same error as you did. I also tried a couple Mastodon instances (spacey.space and mastodon.social) and it seemed to recognize those as valid options.

Is there some way to confirm with the devs of bubbles.town that Lemmy is included in “other Fediverse-compatible servers”?

I know @grant@toast.ooo has used Lemmy as an authentication method for the Fediverse Canvas events, so in theory it should be possible, but the devs might not have implemented it.

Lemmy has some gotchas with handling federated direct messages, which is probably the snag happening here

Lemmy v0.19 and earlier (which includes the vast majority of Lemmy instances) only accept ChatMessage object types, which aren’t supported on most implementations

They have an “in progress” implementation of the “Note” object type for direct messages (which almost every other implementation uses), but it hasn’t landed yet from the looks of it

Hi @grant@toast.ooo and @threelonmusketeers and thanks for answering. I’m not familiar with the workings of authentication and how it relates to the different types of instances. I kinda thought that all fediverse instances had somehow settled/agreed on a compatible standard but it seems my understanding is too shallow 😑.

I just saw from their FAQ that they only support a specific type of instance:

        Which platforms are supported?

Anything with Mastodon-compatible OAuth: Mastodon, Pixelfed, GoToSocial, Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Sharkey, Hometown.

Bluesky, Lemmy, and Threads are not supported.

I wrote to Ben of Bubbles.town and he replied very kindly that until Lemmy sets up an Oauth flow, he can’t implement a login through Lemmy. Here is his response:

thanks for your kind mail and your question about Lemmy auth.

Lemmy login isn’t on the roadmap, and I don’t expect that to change. Bubbles signs you in with the OAuth flow that Mastodon introduced: your server shows you a consent page, and Bubbles only receives a token that confirms who you are. Mastodon, Pixelfed, GoToSocial and a few others offer that flow, Lemmy doesn’t. A Lemmy app logs in with your username and password, and I don’t want Bubbles to ever ask for or handle your password.

The workaround Grant mentioned (sending a code by direct message) runs into the problem he described. Most Lemmy servers can’t receive the kind of direct message that other Fediverse software sends, so the code would never reach you.
