I like makeup and skincare, I’m far from a professional but I have my knowledge, I’d have thought someone whose job is dedicated to the industry would know much more than me…
Well turns out this woman gave me the worst advice ever super confidently. I have very dry skin, I’ve always used hydrating foundations even if they transfer they make my skin look glowy.
Well this woman said that the brand I use is so terrible I should use another brand that was more expensive and of “better quality for the skin”, my makeup looks cakey for the first time in my life, this foundation is so dry it sucks up the little moisture I have of my skin.
I did some research and turns out the price of a foundation doesn’t make it healthier for your skin, all brands here have the same safety quality by law, so you’re basically paying for the brand.
She also didn’t know, as an aesthetician, that retinol can get rid of acne. I mentioned it to her and she said very confidently that retinol doesn’t do that and that retinol destroys people’s skin… Obviously if you use it wrong it will destroy your skin but the point is to use it as indicated. Also it was literally invented to get rid of acne so how can you be so sure the purpose of retinol is only for ageing?
Idk this woman really made me think I can only trust myself when it comes to beauty advice, that or a very professional Korean aesthetician because the western ones know jack shit.
And sometimes they’re really, really wrong. Look at the “Metaverse”. Zuckerberg renamed his entire company and allocated billions to a failed project.
I work in healthcare. You can only trust yourself, period. You wouldn’t believe the things that doctors will say, even after completing medical school.
For instance: man lives a sober lifestyle and went to an island off the coast of South America for a party. He took two puffs off a joint while there, and has had abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea for three months since he’s been back. Sees a conservative doctor. The doctor tells him it must be cannabis hyper-emesis syndrome from the two puffs and doesn’t even test for any bacterial infection from the travel. Doctor totally ignores that you don’t get cannabis hyperemesis syndrome from two puffs off a joint one time in 20 years, and completely wastes the man’s time to guilt him about the devil’s lettuce. Man’s symptoms continue for many more months because he doesn’t see another doctor, and the one he’s seeing has already written him off as a dumb hippie.
The things I’ve seen in their notes defy even basic logic. It totally changed how I look at the patient/provider relationship. It absolutely has to be a collaborative cognitive effort to choose a care path, otherwise the patient could be putting all their trust in someone who is fundamentally unable to help them due to their own stupidity and bias.
If it’s that way for something as important as healthcare, I think it is that way for everything. You are the best advocate and caretaker for you. There’s nothing wrong with getting advice, but the decision to do something is totally yours. Trust is earned through interactions, not through fancy certifications.
Boy, I wish the modern world was easier, but if you don’t keep your guard up, there are legions of people ready to sell you some snake oil and pat themselves on the back for a job well done.
Doctors have much more specialized schooling than I do.
You bet my ass I will listen to them or else you will end up like those dumb fucks who did their own research for the covid vaccine.
Yeah, every profession has people bad at their job, but if you think you’ve got a bad provider, get a second opinion. Don’t write off a whole body of healthcare over one person.
Man even this is not that simple. These days I say that if you want proper medical care, you need to see a university medical center doctor. I’ve seen so many private practice doctors in all the specialties for chronic conditions and even the good ones write completely wrong information in my chart, miss obvious things based on assumptions, and forget that I have to go home and coordinate all these tests they ordered while being completely untreated and unmedicated for the condition (which does get used against you if you’re able to do it, but you don’t get any care if you can’t). A series of “bad” doctors, and by that I mean like 2-3, will waste years of your life. And I’m not trying to be a hater. They’re just so overworked and drowning in paperwork and insurance bs, that the burnout is palpable.
Always research and advocate for yourselves, ask clarifying questions and keep in mind there’s a lot of sexism and other bigotry in medicine. Don’t be afraid to get second opinions.
You were talking to a professional sales person, not a professional skin care expert.
The sales profession is to upsell to sell you an additional product or a more expensive alternative.
The skin care professional is called a doctor.
She was trying to give me genuine advice, she wasn’t working we were literally on a car trip.
I did some research and turns out the price of foundation doesn’t make it healthier …
Oh you sweet summer child… That’s literally everything!
The person you talked to was a sales person, not a professional. They’re everywhere, and most pretend to be professionals.
