An AI lab out of China has ignited panic throughout Silicon Valley after releasing AI models that can outperform America's best despite being built more cheaply and with less-powerful chips. DeepSeek unveiled a free, open-source large-language model in late December that it says took only two months and less than $6 million to build. CNBC's Deirdre Bosa interviews Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas and explains why the DeepSeek has raised alarms on whether America's global lead in AI is shrinking.

    That’s such a clickbaity way to say it. Who exactly is panicking?

    Gemini is an idiot compared to ChatGPT so Google was already behind OpenAI. Are they panicking?

    Is Sam Altman panicking (I doubt it)?

    EDIT: So, watching the video, it sounds like China was able to train the model for amazingly cheap compared to what US tech giants are able to do. But I bet those investment numbers are massively underreported. DeepSeek’s creators are super secretive and you can bet everything we know about them has been sanitized, approved and edited by the Chinese government. I bet if we could truely investigate, we’d discover that the CCP supported, funded and subsidized the training in all kinds of ways.
