Last weeks thread here

Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

Honestly didn’t even register that it might be eye related. Optometrist said that I could potentially move onto permanent glasses as well if I wanted (apparently my far vision is slightly off as well and I have astigmatism) but I just couldn’t get myself to start wearing glasses full time lol

I think I have astigmatism as well, which the optometrist said is why wearing glasses makes me dizzy/gives me a headache. I’m supposed to wear them all the time which my brain will adjust to. However, I just got them to write me a weaker prescription and now I don’t have issues putting them on/off anymore 🤷

Hmm that’s interesting. Do you think they just got the prescription wrong initially? Hopefully the glasses help me with my headaches lol.

This is the first time outside of being offered during school, that I had a proper eye exam done. Man didn’t realise how expensive the whole thing gets if you end up needing glasses. Don’t think I would’ve gotten tested if I didn’t have insurance.

Nah the different optometrist I saw a few years later came up with the same prescription, but I mentioned the headaches/dizziness and they told me that (things look funny as well, as the glasses try to fix the distortion but my brain has already accounted for it). They suggested if I wasn’t going to wear them all the time then they could reduce the strength, it wasn’t a particularly strong prescription anyway.

I’ve had very hit and miss experiences with spec savers, but you can get an eye exam and a couple of pairs of glasses for a few hundred bucks (assuming your eyes aren’t too special). If you’re an AA member like I am then you can get a free eye test. And if you don’t mind the awkwardness you can get the free eye test, then go online to their website and request your prescription, then go to zenni and order some glasses. It can work out even cheaper (though I don’t think it’s a huge difference).

I’ve been lucky that in the past I’ve worked at various public sector agencies that gave you a few hundred towards glasses every two years as part of the contract. Combining that with free AA eye test meant I got free glasses for years.

Interesting regarding the headaches. Been doing some reading online and it seems that some optometrists sometimes recommend a +0.5 add (very minor correction for near sight) for a lot of people that do a lot of computer work etc, to help their eyes with some of the heavy lifting. This is the exact prescription that I got so hopefully it helps.

Yeah since my test, I’ve since learned, through reading online, that a lot of people recommend those online retailers. Here’s hoping I won’t need to buy too many glasses in the future, but if I need to do so, it’s good to know these things. Plus we’re going to Japan this year, and it seems they have a lot of affordable glasses and services where you get your prescription glasses made within a few hours! None of this waiting for a week plus business lol.
