Just make local fliers and put them around your city and to local businesses that will let you. Go old school dumbasses.

That’s what we’ve been doing for our rural town’s group. The problem we keep running into is that the fliers keep getting taken down, and we don’t have the money to keep replacing them.

I argued hard against setting up as a Facebook group and volunteered webspace for our own site instead, but I keep hearing complaints at the meetings that our emails aren’t reaching them, and they always suggest that we use Facebook or X instead. We aren’t getting a lot of bounce messages, so it’s either getting lost in the spam box, or people aren’t reading the emails, and I’m not sure how to fix that.

I was an organizer for Indivisible last year, but since been jaded.

I wonder if next time hosting a matrix server would work? Have a QR code on the fliers.

It’s worth a shot, but I wouldn’t have high hopes. Getting people on Signal was hard enough, and that’s literally just downloading an app. I am the techiest person in the group though, so maybe you’d have better luck in a non-rural area. It’s a low-income area, so the schools aren’t the best.

We’ve had decent luck with small regional newspapers doing an article about us, so that might be another option you could look into?

I did a few interviews for the local npr station and a few people heard. Honestly the thing that sucked was most people who showed up, were from my reddit posts. Even the much older people. I no longer use reddit.

It’s hard to organize without using any of the social media hedgemony, but people make it sound so easy, lol.
