We need to start using differently terminology. While injury and deaths prevented by such an island may not rise to the level of “terrorism”, they’re no “accident”. When it’s reckless endangerment, that’s not accidental.

We just got one of these installed and it’s amazing. This was one of the most dangerous sections of road, with a hockey rink on one side and parking on the other so frequent pedestrian crossings. However people impatient with waiting would blast though on the wrong side of the street to get into the turn lane, endangering pretty much everyone. That can’t happen anymore. Too early to see stats though
Don’t laugh - you can buy bamboo cutting boards very cheaply and they grow back quickly.
My brother was willing to try wooden cutting boards based on bamboo being cheap enough that in the worst case scenario they were disposable
Even in more urban areas …. My ex asked for help getting internet service in her new condo, and I found out the entire town has fiber, except her condo development. They have an exclusive contract with ComCast and she can’t do anything about it
Wow, even the Cross Bronx is seeing less traffic? That’s amazing!
I haven’t driven through there lately but will have to dig into it a bit: GPS tends to take me through the city if I travel south and I have no idea if it crosses over into the congestion pricing zone. And it’s not like I can set GPS to avoid tolls - no one has that kind of time
If you did have a car, where would you go for electronics? There’s not many places left I wouldn’t avoid.
I’m near enough to MicroCenter and You-Do-It, but most people aren’t and there’s really not much else worth going to.
Online is king for electronics shopping
We have a stable genius in charge who will see through the subterfuge, turn the trap around, and single-handedly create the best deal
That article has a pretty extreme example: guy on 21 acres atop a steep ridge who doesn’t have phone service or running water or probably any infrastructure. There’s going to be people you can’t reach with fiber and this may be one of them. We can argue about that when the other 99% has fast internet service
Can’t “Make Coal Great Again” unless you force there to be customers. Why doesn’t everyone consider the profit margins of coal oligarchs in West Virginia? At least have pity for the automated equipment that would be out of jobs
All posturing and bullying aside ….
Building a nuclear weapon is “easy” and the knowledge is generally available. However enriching uranium is much tougher. For many decades the most effective way to limit nuclear weapon proliferation has been to restrict enrichment efforts.
I hope you’re not questioning why it’s a good idea to limit how many countries have nuclear weapons. Sure, the ones that have them are due for plenty of criticism but you can’t escape the math of more countries with nuclear weapons means more chances of someone using one.
As a citizen of the only country to use a nuke in anger …. I’m fine with everyone else calling that out assuming they’re serious about preventing it from ever happening again
Sure, new data centers are a necessary evil that have to be built somewhere, but ……
What’s in it for the town?
Sure they should be somewhere but how about somewhere with the infrastructure to support it? Somewhere already developed?
It’s not clear from the article whether this is a one time decrease from the noticeable tax increase, whether people adjusted to the higher price or it continues reducing smoking, or how much is credit to increased spending on smoking cessation
Most important, it’s not clear whether that info helps anyone else. As a resident of a small state, I imagine we’d just have people jump the border and buy elsewhere. Most parts of California are a much longer drive to a different state with lower vice taxes.
Maybe it’s just an argument for a significant increase in federal taxes, but I can’t imagine that actually happening in the era of corporate ownership of politicians and blatant class warfare. Actually it’s a dream come true for Republican outrage politics, where they can play on emotions, populist bombast and “muh freedumb” without actually doing anything useful
“Art of the Deal”. Always start “negotiations” with a threat to go nuclear, then brag and posture and bully. Deal
It is though. It’s not like they’re brave undercover heroes going into cartel territory, trying to protect their families from retaliation. These are in general population hiding their faces because they know what they’re doing is illegal, unethical, and would be shamed by pretty much everyone. They’re are trying to escape charges. They are criminals
That’s hilarious, thanks for the image! Not the first time I’ve been accused of not being gentle enough
They’re not ruining their economy by fighting what makes them great or their people healthy. They have their grift and corruption more under control. They’re not cutting back on investments for their future in favor of investments for their past. They have the attention span to commit to a plan for more than four years at a time.
Or at least waste and abuse
Yeah that’s my main culinary goal for this year. Eat beans. And lentils. Cook them. Bulk them. Spice them. Try different styles. They’ve never really been a significant part of my diet and I want to change that.
A big part of that goal is to have better choices when I’m not motivated to cook. Many bean/lentil dishes seem well suited for bulk prep and make good leftovers. I just need to get started.
Everyone: holy shit, $1T! We need to do something
Senate Republicans: hold my beer
I’ll disagree with that one for this use case. Usually trees are a great answer, but we’re looking for something that can reliably protect people’s lives while maintaining good sight lines. A tree is not enough.
