  • All that power means our Prime Ministers are also incredibly accountable to the people every election.

Loom how fast the polling has changed once that powerful leader left and someone else looks to be taking his place.

Sure, there are flaws but I’d much rather have governments able to pass significant legislation upon which they can be judged rather than say, American style insanity where almost everything is passed through budget reconciliation and squabbling in Congress means every bill is stuffed with handouts across various constituencies.

  • Cards on the table: I am admittedly, from BC and while I basically like our NDP government, I am also unable to forget the fast ferries debacle that cost us almost half a billion in 90s dollars. That being said, pre-trump, I was still hoping for the Liberals to lose hard enough that the NDP won, maybe a minority with the Liberals as a bit of a sanity check.

Okay, with that being said, my concerns are basically a trade war is goddamn expensive and going to hurt. We’re going to want to support a bunch of people and businesses while working internationally with similarly affected nations. That seems exactly like Carney’s wheelhouse. The NDP on the other hand, never met a union they didn’t love. Last election they wanted to expand Canada Post to unnecessary services in part to help out the union. I’d be worried they’d try to hold or worse, create zombie jobs that are expensive and inefficient (eg fighting mechanization of ports.) I also wouldn’t trust them to have the fiscal probity to discern which of their ideas are both morally good and economically good (like say $10 a day daycare which is almost certainly a net benefit to the economy vs a wishlist of “everything should be good!”) It’s hard to guess what exactly they’d do; their 2022 election campaign ran like a giant wishlist so you have to read tea leaves to guess what they’d have actually done.

At a time when Canadian businesses are going to have to make very difficult decisions to try and survive, I just don’t trust the NDP to act in a way that protects them and thus protects us.

But the bigger concern is like I said at the very beginning of my previous post, I don’t think they can win and I think Carney can and short term, I think Carney better at defending Canada than Polievre, and long term I think Carney a better bet to protect our climate change strategies, like the carbon tax.

  • I suppose in a job with academics they have pretty precise experiment goals etc, so probably less open to suggestions. I don’t know what research y’all are doing but I’d have very little to offer on most scientific subjects!

Was talking to a soccer buddy last night (another dev, apparemtly everyone is a dev this week) and he’s been applying to jobs where he’d be supporting academics, any suggestions or hints for an interview and/or beyond?

And yeah, you’re right, despite the sunburns, aches and fear of death it really was bliss. I got my pal 50 feet of mosquito net for Christmas, we’re going to try and engineer something wild to protect ourselves on the deck at night…!

  • If we’re entering a terrifying economic time where our biggest trading partner is doing crazy shit, a banker with Carney’s record kind of appeals.

Given current economic arrangements… I dunno, I don’t think a radical transformer can win, I don’t want crazy populist bullshit (Left or Right) I just want someone who has basically progressive values (social/wealth inequality, climate change etc) who will keep my friends employed. I’ll be fine regardless but my friends are starting families and while the largest economy on Earth is run by an unrestrained lunatic, I’d like some safety for them, as those are some cute kids.

Same idea as portfolio diversification. When I have time and few crises, yeah, some sexy stocksare fun. But the closer we get to crunch time, the more we move to safe assets.

  • Ha, fully agree, glad to hear I’m not the only dev who enjoys the other teams! (Sometimes I’m not so sure… Like, when I had to lead a training about getting project requirements that basically boiled down to “have you tried asking people questions?” the answer to which was a resounding “No. They wrote down what they wanted, why would I ask about it? If they meant something else, they should write that.”

Oh dang, thanks for the machinist community, that looks super cool. Love seeing the stuff people can build, such a refreshing change from our intangible but ridiculously complex projects. “Oh, so you got some numbers to show there? Okay.” “No but those numbers are really tricky and… Yes. I just got some numbers to show there.” Another dev buddy and I worked on his cabin during the summer and though the work was hard and sweaty my God was it rewarding.

Absolutely love my work environment, even if I spend too much of it on here… Hope you do too!

  • Yeah, the social thing cracks me up as I also work heavily with the events and comms team who are, as you might expect from their unit, fun and gregarious folks who genuinely enjoy each other so it’s a bit of whiplash going from their meetings or social events to ours.

I wonder what proportion of lemmys are devs…

Ha, yeah for a lot of academics I feel their work is their life and they see no reason it shouldn’t be yours too! I hope you’re still able to carve out your own “fuck off n leave me alone” time!

  • Saw some old friends and we went out for fancy pizza, at a presumably instagram famous place given the line/ages etc. But, with 4 old friends, laughing and catching up in line was still a great time!

Also played a few games of soccer, two where I felt like the old man I pretend not to be but two felt really good.

And the weather forecast is finally calling for snow on our local ski hills so I’m going to take a morning off and if the weather holds, a full day for a better mountain farther away.

Oh, and finally listened to a buddy and started Severance, holy hell that show is great! Anyone else watched/watching? (Please no spoilers, I just started!)
