  • Fair enough. But I also get RSUs as compensation so I own a (tiny) part of the company. And a bunch of others via ETF. So I’m part bourgeois!

I just fail to see this “we must seize the means of production” Motto being applicable to current (western) capitist countries. Plenty of people can do that just by giving their notice and registering an LLC (or SL, or GmbH, or whatever your local equivalent is).

And not only highly educated elites (which arguably in the US is quite discriminatory, in Europe we have free higher education) but plenty of working class jobs can do it.

You want to seize the means of production? Put the pitchfork down, fill form 123abc and godspeed.

  • Not only that, it insists on this 1800s argument/fantasy about factory workers. In an age and economy where 70% of people work in the services sector.

I seized my means of production. Or rather, bought them on Amazon. Same for lawyers, accountants, mechanics, electricians, plumbers, cleaning people, photographers, gardeners, painters…

  • Same sentiment here.

First time, maybe people weren’t paying attention, maybe they wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe they really hated the Clinton dynasty, and to be fair he lost the popular vote by millions. Ok, you guys got screwed, learn the lesson and move on.

Second time, there was all the precedent: disastrous covid handling (hundreds of thousands of excess deaths), ruined economy, absolute international clown show, hiring his family, all the golf (at his properties), racism, sharpies, crowd sizes, all the testimonials of his incompetence from anyone working with him, his own VP not endorsing him… And the crimes. And the treason. And the porn star. And Project 2025. And not only he won again, but this time he got the popular vote. The American people made their bed, and instead of pillows they used a face eating leopard.

We rent servers in the cloud because it’s cheaper than owning them. I did the same for some projects when I was freelancing.

The software I write… I don’t own it, same as an electrician doesn’t own the cables he installs in your house. It’s the product I’m getting paid to create, why would I own it?

This whole “we should own the means of production” screams of 19th century farmers and factory workers. It’s 2025, plenty of people already own their means of production, from IT bros and lawyers to farmers, electricians and cleaning personnel. And communism didn’t have to do anything with it.

So why is it more common for mechanics to be exploited by jiffy lube? Other than things that require the dealership (to keep the warranty, for instance) I always go to small shops, with max 2 or 3 employees. As far as I know, jacks, wrenches and screwdrivers haven’t gotten up in price. In my opinion, starting your own shop is hard and people prefer to go the easy way.

I know I did. I myself was self-employed for a while and I went back to a salary, the few extra bucks are not worth the effort. Yes, my employer makes some profit from my work and we have a millionaire CEO, but I can go on vacation or call in sick without stress consuming my time. I’m not in the US tho…

Which means exactly are we seizing back?

Because I already own my means of production… And in western countries, where 80%+ of population works in the services sector, it’s not a unique situation. A lawyer, an accountant, even a mechanic or electrician already own their means of production.

    We don’t live in the 1800s anymore…

  • All answers you got here are good, but it depends how simple do you want it.

Your current solution doesn’t meet one of your criteria already. The code that produces the data cannot run for an extended period of time if it keeps all data in memory and only writes it at shutdown (or USR1).

It would be trivial to modify the program to write on every new data point collected. Then you just tail that file from the Webserver process.

You could use more performant solutions, like explicit pipes, Unix sockets, websockets, or even shared memory, but keeping it simple is often the best way. This makes your data collection better (no memory “leaks”) without really adding code, you could in fact remove code (USR1 handling).
