They/them preferred, but I won’t be mad if you forget :). Retired programmer. Many health conditions. If I’m uncharacteristically grumpy, I probably have a migraine.

  • Yeah, most of my life was 100% caring about others; 0% cares about myself. If anything I had the opposite problem of indifference, way too much empathy. It’s important to find a balance; it’s not healthy in either extreme.

Biggest lesson I learnt is that being rude or imposing on others isn’t necessarily bad or evil… sometimes it’s actually the right thing to do. Kindness isn’t equal to acquiescence, and you are also deserving of kindness. People can take you for granted and cause you harm, while you quietly martyr yourself for no benefit. Be selective on what you choose to spend yourself on.

You probably know all this already ~ just writing it out for anyone else reading :)

  • This might be highly specific, but the ability to follow my moral compass. Like many others with autism, I have a strong sense of justice, and hate lying. Situations where I’m forced to lie while causing harm are the worst for my soul; it feels like I’m swallowing poison.

I had to accept that the world isn’t designed for this mindset, though. Honesty is often punished incredibly harshly, rather than rewarded. But it’s a sacrifice I’ve chosen to take time and time again. I’ve decided it’s important enough to me, while acknowledging the very real downsides. Making it a deliberate choice was surprisingly helpful for my mental health.

In general I did spend a long, long time meditating on how unfair life is and how I don’t fit into society. How badly others treat me or hurt me.

There’s hundreds to thousands of small and unique frictions that makes functioning in modern life hell for those with autism. I think this was also an important step, though. Acknowledging and accepting these frictions and limitations made me feel free and more happy with my life. Compared to before where everything just felt difficult and confusing. Bringing things to truth and understanding was significant.

I can’t afford a formal diagnosis or treatment. It costs $4,000 here in Australia for an adult diagnosis, before even starting treatment. I did see a psychiatrist informally for much cheaper, and they said I very likely have it, which is good enough for me. Otherwise it’s been a self-led journey.

  • Honestly that was probably the biggest thing for me. When I realised that I’m allowed to be uncomfortable with a situation and remove myself from it, or to voice my needs.

Sometimes people will ask something of me that makes my whole body tense up. Old me would ignore that and push through it. Nowadays, I acknowledge my own discomfort.

The funny thing is, there’s almost always another path that works out better for everybody. I was sacrificing myself for no good reason

  • I have a similar story. Not sure whether this will make you feel better or worse, but might as well share it. This is in Australia for context.

I know someone who made too many self-deprecating jokes at work, and a coworker reported it to the police. After work, the police arrived at their home, permanently confiscated all their firearms collection, permanently revoked their firearms licence, and detained them in a mental hospital ward for a fortnight against their will.

I visited them a few times in hospital. They were neighbours with actually psychotic people wandering around and screaming. They had no access to a phone or any of their possessions; they only had their hospital gown and nothing to do but wander around and wait. They were so extremely unhappy for that fortnight, I remember thinking to myself; “if they weren’t suicidal before, they probably are now.” Nothing they said would convince the doctors to let them leave early.

Afterwards; their work life and financials suffered significantly from the forced unpaid break. They had to quit half their hobbies at the shooting range and gun club, and they became even more depressed.

They seem a bit better now, years later; but to me it always seemed like a massive overreaction and mismanagement by everybody involved. They still can’t own firearms.

I have aphantasia. I still draw manually; I just need a reference photo (or subject) and “modify” it as I draw. Imagine if you couldn’t remember what something looked like so you have to memorise “ok their right eye is 30% down their face and only half visible from this angle and extends 20% horizontally at about 10 degrees until it’s covered by the nose which is…” etc. Then I draw that tiny line and have to check again

Writing it out, I just realised it’s actually similar to how you would describe it to an LLM 😂. I will admit that I’m very unsuited to this skill, and it’s extremely difficult for me, but I still find it fun. Maybe because of the difficulty itself?

Actually, lately I’ve been challenging myself by using pen and doing line-art. Normally, because I fuck up so much, I do messy sketches; so it was really interesting using a medium that is so punishing. I’ve learnt with line art it’s mostly about what you don’t draw, rather than what you do, if that makes sense

I fucked around with a locally installed image generator A.I. for a while in the past ~ it was fun, but I got bored of it quickly, and it became kind of hollow

  • Jellyfin basically only uses TMDB by default as a metadata provider. I think IMDB enshittified or something like Reddit did.

TMDB is a lot less mature than IMDB so sometimes the identification isn’t as good. It’s based on user contributions like Wikipedia. It also has “opinions” about the correct episode and season listings of TV shows, which has caused me big headaches in the past.

You can enable optional plugins in the dashboard to enable other metadata providers like TVDB and Anime DB and more. I decided to just use TMDB and go update the website myself when I notice anything wrong or missing.

Jellyfin is also much less forgiving of errors… like if you put an episode in the wrong season it will just appear broken
