These are the kind of people who act like their entire race and gender is being erased when 1 in 10 Marvel movies don’t have a white male lead. Which is a problem, IMO. Maybe the solution is to have a women focused instance and I would be all for it. But also, that’s a little bit like India having a women only train because the men are too rapey on other trains. It allows safe passage for women for now but doesn’t actually fix or address the problem of rapey men.

If it’s a particular community being targeted, I’d probably start with people who aren’t subscribed or don’t contribute but camp out downvoting everything anyway. I mean, to me it sounds very much like this user’s community is being blatantly targeted, so I’m not sure I understand why trends still need to be researched before anything can be done about it.

But I’m not an admin and I actually don’t know what tools you have available to you. I was just under the impression that you could see when people who don’t actually belong to a certain community go there just to downvote everything. Reddit managed to make people fear consequences for downvote brigading though, not sure how they pulled it off.

If this really is something that admins on various Lemmy instances are just too helpless to do anything about, then I apologise for directing my anger towards admins. And then I don’t know what the solution is either because without any sort of assistance in the matter, women are just going to give up even trying to set up spaces here (actually seems like that’s already happened for the most part). And so the culture will just never change.

Just went there. Top post is politics, next post is about a touchy feely doctor, there’s a few about body image, more politics, a reminder to not use period tracker apps because the USA government is literally taking women’s rights over their own bodies away, dating advice, more politics.

Looks to me like a women-oriented subreddit for discussing women’s issues, just like it always has. Could you point out some of these ‘femcels’ there to me? Should they be praising the Trump administration, swooning over pervert doctors and sharing Andrew Tate screenshots instead?

Maybe a lot are a bit angry there but I think they’ve got every fucking right to be angry right now. Don’t you?

Based on what I’ve learnt, what’s holding Lemmy back is that a large amount of users are fucking man babies that brigade any women-oriented communities and drive women in general away from this place, while admins just sit back and allow them to. The Lemmy mouse needs a fedora.

Fuck yeah! Only two episodes out so far though. And 20 minutes a week for this show is a bit of torture. Especially without the random discussions and memes to keep you going until the next episode.

Thanks for the enlightening thread. And that puts a dampener on the enthusiasm that I was feeling for this place. Not that I should be surprised or anything.

I might misunderstand how things work here but it sounds to me like if entire communities are getting bombed by downvotes, then it’s the various admins across instances that are allowing this to happen. And it puts a bit of a dark cloud over this place now for me.

Very disappointing to find out the real reason why women-oriented communities aren’t exactly thriving here. But not surprising, I guess, although I was expecting better from a platform that seems so generally left wing. Can’t even expect the men here to stomp that shit out. And now I’m waiting for someone to come and respond something along the lines of “not all men” while not addressing or confronting the issue or taking any steps to push for change.

Edit: aren’t admins able to see who is downvoting? So basically the admins of your instance are just sitting back and allowing certain people to ruin things for others in communities that don’t concern them?

50 years from now, considering that the USA elections changed nothing for Palestine either way (or maybe even made things worse for them under Trump now), the history books won’t be talking about these ‘brave’ heroes that sat out the vote for the sake of Palestine. They’ll be talking about all of the apathetic, zero empathy, selfish children who were happy to sit back and watch LGBTQ+ people and other minorities get their rights and dignity stripped from them because it didn’t affect them personally.

These guys chose their side and the history books will reflect that.

I’m not the moderator type myself but I would definitely be there upvoting / lurking / throwing in an occasional two cents. You’re actually making me consider a rewatch now lol.

I hope that you advertise this in certain subs on Reddit because I’m sure there must be lots of people by now that have come here looking for certain communities, then gone back to Reddit after seeing the sad search results. The people from /r/actuallesbians would be nice to have around here on Lemmy.

There’s also no really decent or active feminist communities on this platform (unless the good ones are all on some defederated instance I haven’t seen). And the discussion for Harley Quinn that has just come out is a ghost town. And there’s no Xena community, or She-ra. There is at least an Owl House community though.

None of these things really have to be connected and this is all anecdotal but I get the impression that this platform (Lemmy as a whole , not Blåhaj) is short on women in general. At least compared to Reddit or other platforms like Bluesky.

Edit: no WitchesvsPatriarchy either (besides some dead community that someone tried to make non-binary specific) and I’m sure I could keep listing them as I remember what I’ve tried looking up here, or if I just go check my Reddit account.

I’m late here but felt like sharing my goblin tendencies too. I’ve actually got a lot of random shit that I collect and keep in a box, thought I would take a couple of my favourites out. Sorry for potato quality picture, I have a potato quality phone.

• A plasticky spiked collar that a stripper I used to party with and had a huge crush on took off from her neck on put on mine one night. And no, I’m not the strip club type and never even watched her work, her and her colleagues and friends used to frequent the metal/alternative club that I haunted. 15 to 20 years ago. Actually I’m not that old yet, more like 10 to 15 years ago.
• A card with a witch that I found lying on the ground probably also around 15 years ago. Says “creative child games” on the back.
• A completely washed away and blank puzzle piece that I also picked up off the ground somewhere.
• A round rock with the word “Safety” written on it that was randomly handed to me by a hippie girl at a music festival years ago.
• A very poorly cut black tourmaline (or so I was told) that I bought at a flea market for way too much money while tripping balls on ecstacy. That was while I was still in my hippie phase so very close to 20 years ago.
• Lucky beans! I’ve just always loved them since I was a kid and have bunch floating around. I’ve even put some in the linings of one of my jackets.

I’ve actually been a boring hermit for at least the last 10 years, so I’m running out of trinkets with cool stories attached to them though.

LineageOS 20 on the Nokia 4.2. The only option for this phone besides LineageOS 19 and it’s one of these cases where the dev just stopped updating anything and deleted their XDA profile. Might go back to vanilla but the problem is that’s a downgrade in Android version too.

This whole phone is a regret. My previous phone had just died unexpectedly and it was a spur of the moment purchase with a low budget, based on nostalgia for a ‘Nokia’ that doesn’t actually exist anymore. Should’ve just gone for a cheap Samsung and I probably would’ve at least had more choice in custom firmwares.

About bloody time. Containers are fine for on the fly use - for checking what pages look like logged out, or visiting a link that you don’t want affecting algorithms etc. but for separating personal and work and whatever else, profiles are the way to go. It’s actually already pretty easy to add ‘about:profiles’ to the toolbar but the more accessible they make it, the better.

I look forward to profiles also making it to the Android app 5 to 10 years from now.
