  • For me it was about ten years ago, when i started working in a company with a lot of people 10 years younger than me. They all listened to new French rap, so i gave it a shot as i am a fan of the 90s stuff so i figured i’d like it. The truth is i couldn’t understand any of it… not that i hated it, but it was just so alien to me. I didn’t understand enough of it to even form an opinion.

I realized that i had missed not only that moment in music, but also all of its precursors, so i really had no point of reference to it. I guess the pop music i grew up with, even the stuff i hated, was always one or two generations away from some genre of music i could identify. But this was based on a whole chain of influences that was unknown to me. A great feeling tbh.

This line of thinking is crazy to me cause I don’t see what’s so admirable about Sparta. They had this whole degenerate culture that was entirely dedicated to war and it only gave them a slight inconsistent military advantage. Also this advantage was made possible mostly by their excessive use of slave labor. They still got their asses handed out to them regularly…

  • I remember when Harmontown existed, they invited Neumann over and most of the interview was just drunk Dan Harmon saying “ok so you wrote two of the best screenplays in history, what the fuck bro”. (Second one was Starship Troopers obviously). On a podcast that was obsessed with dissecting storytelling, this must have been the most cited movie, along with die hard.

Personally my go to is Mad Max Fury Road, as a kind of filter similar to what you have going on. It’s a movie you need to engage with on its own terms, otherwise it is completely meaningless and you will miss the whole entire point.

It seems a lot of people have a problem with clear and radical artistic choices, and will mistake them for defects. This kind of media “literacy” is utterly boring to me as they just train themselves to detect and detest any deviation from Hollywood norms.
