I went from Ubuntu to Debian, then to Arch, then to Alpine. Can’t wait to move off from Linux completely to get a kernel with a sane democratic management.

111·13 days agoSo from what I have understood, it is entirely AI generated? Or was the prototype AI generated and then a human continued the way?

Programming@programming.dev•A program to automatically generate commit messages locally without an LLM?
2·13 days agoWell, if a meaningful commit message can be created only with a model as big as 1B parameters, I’m better off doing them meself.

Linux@programming.dev•Why do you use a systemd-less distro (if you do)?
3·13 days agoSo far, I’m good. It’s not the best Desktop distro. But since I want an OS for development and also for a workstation, Alpine is good.
Also, it’s kinda DIY like Arch, or worse!

21·13 days agoCommit messages are for sure short and easy to come up with, already. The problem’s typing some common stuff every single time.

3·13 days agoThanks for letting us know. Yeah sure. It’s not worth it. I personally take about 10s to write the commit message. So such a thing will just make it worse.

2·13 days agoI see. didn’t think of this one. Note that there is a commit message, one line, and there is an extended description. The extended description, most of the time, is like you said and an LLM cannot do it. But I was wondering if that one line could be auto-generated. If not for every commit, at least for some common changes. But I will take your word that a Language model won’t be good.

Programming@programming.dev•A program to automatically generate commit messages locally without an LLM?
26·13 days agoOf course it is. We use computers to automate things. This is one of them. What is the problem with that?

34·13 days agothey are not notes to meself when there are others in the project. And the commit message is not always one line. Sometimes it’s more. And even if it is one line, it is still annoying to manually type for everything and every change.

5·13 days ago8GB means around 8B parameters. It’s no where near small. I meant the classic language models before LLMs existed. Something which I can easily execute on CPU to generate the commit messages.
And here, I’m not asking for “what model” rather “what utility” which uses such these models. Finding or training a model is much easier than maintaining such a software and keeping it useful.

Linux@programming.dev•Why do you use a systemd-less distro (if you do)?
21·13 days agoI use alpine and freebsd. I want full control of me PC/server. And many times, I need DIY unusual setups. Systemd is way too complex to master it so I can get those working. That’s why I use a simple thing which I can learn well, so I can implement whatever setup I need.
I used to be on Ubuntu, Debian and Arch. And implementing such these setups was too hard under systemd. However, if you don’t need this. Systemd just works fine for you as did for me in past.
Thanks. It’s a good short post.
Also, there is nothing wrong with wanting attention. Attention is a natural need of any human. I want me voice to be heard, me post to be read. They are all okay.
As you said quick rewards within 2-3 days, what about writing mods for Luanti? https://luanti.org/
I am personally a Luanti addict(both game development and game playing!)
