  • Fact is that automation costs energy, and energy creates CO2.

    I’ve talked about this above: “If you use local small and natural sources of energy instead of burning millions of tons of coal, you also don’t pollute the environment as much.”

    Burning isn’t the only possible source of energy and it’s really effective only with centralisation. Some niche attempts at creating means of local power generation already exist. For example, getting power from living plants. I think switching to such decentralised and eco-friendly forms of energy production is the solution to climate change.

    Fascism is another manifestation of “human egoism” which I adressed above. Urbanization doesn’t exist on its own either. It is a consequence of the centralised mode of production, which to my mind, as I said earlier, is something we are going to move away from.

    Voting and being politically active isn’t going to invent and adopt new means of decentralised production. It is us, regular citizens, who should do it.

  • The ongoing automation is the evidence. The trend is to fully automate the whole production chain and that will lead to decentralisation, because centralisation only makes sense with human labour.

    Human egoism isn’t bad in itself. The problem is that it conflicts with altruism. That’s where it gets destructive. But this can be solved. If everyone can automatically produce what they need themselves, there’s no more competing for who’s going to be the one providing and the one taking. The roles merge. Egoism and altruism become the same thing and neither stays destructive.

  • So I’ll just provide a QR-Code to the grouchat and they are in?

    Yes!

    Is Arcane available for both IOs and Android?

    Oh okay, my bad. I forgot about iOS 😅 ArcaneChat is available only for Android, but DeltaChat is available on both. They are inter-operable, so you can tell Android users to use ArcaneChat and iOS users to use DeltaChat. Or use DeltaChat for both. ArcaneChat just adds a couple features like Markdown.

    And do I need a new inbox programm or an extra email if we use emsil like chat? I use thunderbird and I feel like there would be a lot of alerts popping up?

    DeltaChat creates an account on its own kind of servers automatically so you don’t have to worry about that.

  • That’s just a contradiction of our current mode of production. The negative effect is sure there, but it’s outweighed by the positive outcomes. This gigantic mechanized monolithic production system that turns the whole humanity into one big voracious machine is what eventually will allow us to fully decentralise the way we produce things while keeping the automation and thus avoid the destruction we’ve been causing for so long.

    Think of this: you don’t need packaging if you consume in the same place where you produce. You can also much more easily recycle used materials if you don’t need them to travel for thousands miles and can instead use them right where you are. If you use local small and natural sources of energy instead of burning millions of tons of coal, you also don’t pollute the enviranment as much. All of this will only be possible thanks to this destructive phase we’re currently in. So ultimately we do cater our actual needs - somewhat contradictory at times, but still.

  • DaltaChat (use its fork called ArcaneChat on mobile devices) is super straightforward to start using. You just download the app, enter your nickname - note: no phone number, no email, even no password! - and you’re ready to go. Then you need an invite link to the group chat and that’s it. The onboarding experience is in fact much simpler than on WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal.

    Also as DeltaChat doesn’t require a phone number or other confidentials, it is much more private than Signal. And it has stronger encryption than the latter (AFAIK Signal doesn’t encrypt the message metadata).

    I’ve managed to even get my gandma using DeltaChat (ArcaneChat) so I think it’s the best choice for people who are not very into tech.

    I’m waiting for NixOS to become independent from the kernel (projects which use other kernels already exist) so that all software just kind of automatically gets ported to whatever OS I end up using. Imagine choosing another kernel in the bootloader and then getting the exact same ecosystem that you’ve tuned for yourself but on an entirely different OS!

    Check out NixBSD. It’s like NixOS, but with FreeBSD or OpenBSD kernel instead of Linux. Not sure how usable it is atm though.

    Also there’s Astarinas NixOS. Asterinas is a new Linux abi compatible kernel written in Rust. It is in early development but surely is a promising project.

    “Party” usually stands for “drinking alcohol with random marginals”, and not for “3 friends gather together at home, eat cookies and peacefully play minecraft”.

    No matter the sex, I would bring up my child in such a way they wouldn’t ever need or want to do that kind of destructive stuff to begin with. And if my child finds actually good people as their friends, there wouldn’t be a need to worry for their safety so much.

    Women are more vulnerable than men, but you should avoid places where people would want to exploit your vulnerabilities in the first place.

  • Interesting, gotta check out Flickboard.

    Btw, long-press for 0-9 can be enabled in Thumb Key with YAML like so:

    Code
    ENThumbKeySymbols:
      main:
        key0_0: { longPress: { text: "1" } }
        key0_1: { longPress: { text: "2" } }
        key0_2: { longPress: { text: "3" } }
        key1_0: { longPress: { text: "4" } }
        key1_1: { longPress: { text: "5" } }
        key1_2: { longPress: { text: "6" } }
        key2_0: { longPress: { text: "7" } }
        key2_1: { longPress: { text: "8" } }
        key2_2: { longPress: { text: "9" } }
        key3_0: { longPress: { text: "0" } }
      shifted:
        key0_0: { longPress: { text: "1" } }
        key0_1: { longPress: { text: "2" } }
        key0_2: { longPress: { text: "3" } }
        key1_0: { longPress: { text: "4" } }
        key1_1: { longPress: { text: "5" } }
        key1_2: { longPress: { text: "6" } }
        key2_0: { longPress: { text: "7" } }
