  • Godot has a series of tutorials focused at kids looking to make their first game. should check that out. Godot is really easy to use.

Or you could go the route that many of us did way back in the day with geocities and set up a neocities account and learn the basics of HTML. they can set up their own little website for whatever their passion is. HTML, IMHO, is a great introduction to coding.

  • I switched to OpenBSD about a month ago and I absolutely love it. it’s not my daily driver. It’s smooth, incredibly easy to install and upgrade (just did it today with the release of 8.0) and has everything I need and everything works. found the wifi works a hell of a lot better, almost on par with Linux, than FreeBSD.

Also I really like Haiku. that’s a fun simple OS and the fastest install I’ve ever experienced.

  • I switched to daily driving OpenBSD a month back and it’s been such a smooth and great experience. by far one of the easiest OS installs I’ve ever had (it’s essentially a yes simulator). and what I love about OpenBSD is to get everything working, wifi, gpu drivers, etc it’s literally just doing fw_update in the terminal and that’s it. the upgrade process is just as easy.

It’s so stable, everything is fast and it all just works. plus a fantastic and supportive community backing it.

  • It’s an AI centric “OS” that is being funded by friends and associates of it’s “developer” Daivd Heinemeier Hansen or DHH as he goes by.

It’s essentially a fork of Arch Linux that has been vibe coded by an AI agent to incorporate DHH’s dotfile configurations. It has AI heavily baked into it and is configured in a way that forces the user to use and subscribe to whatever AI agent (they’re all preinstalled btw) they choose in order to configure the system. It uses Hyprland as it’s tiling window manager and has turned the one file lua config for that into 6 separate lua configs that are designed to only be utilized by AI. it has idiotic default keybinds (for example one keybind opens twitter/X) and comes bloated with preinstalled software thus you get a 6GB Iso.

It’s being backed by companies and friends of DHH who have vested interest in AI. Unlike say Windows where a user can easily use the OS without having to use AI with Omarchy you really don’t have a choice if you want to get anything done, thus the reason it’s being backed so heavily. It forces the user to use AI. It’s a bait and switch.

I use KDE. I found GNOME annoying and extemely opinionated. I also got turned off by it when I asked a question on mastodon like a year ago about an issue I was having with GNOME and an actual GNOME dev replied to me and essentially said I was using the DE wrong. basically I wasn’t using it the way the GNOME devs use it.
