A Roman Catholic priest celebrating an evening Mass in southwestern Ecuador has died after a crucifix fell on him during the livestreamed service.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil, a coastal city 265 kilometers (164 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito, identified the priest as Patricio Sánchez of Perpetuo Socorro Church.

Footage of the service on Saturday night shows a heavy crucifix detaching from the wall above the altar and striking Sánchez on the head as he celebrated Mass. He did not appear to see it falling.

Poor dude saw Jesus. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

Hopefully this is a sign to take workplace safety seriously even when that work is religious in nature.

…that you need to hire and engineer to figure out how to attach something that heavy. Can’t just wing it. Also, regular inspections and maintenance aren’t a bad idea either.

And steel-toed boots, protective gloves, safety goggles, etc. When going through old books in the cellar, you need to wear a dust mask as well.

Honestly, probably not a bad idea. Whatever is in that old dust probably isn’t good for your lungs.
