I stick to the default settings and repos, and only change very few things, such as keyboard layout and wallpaper.
I used to do more but when something bricks and you have to reinstall everything it got to be a pain. So i just change a few things and learn to live with the default most the time. I would love some kde settings file ( a single file not 30 or whatever) that I could save to some cloud that would save everything. Mouse accel keyboard settings window size color… even default apps. I would even like it to list downloaded apps. Im fine with it not saving app settings but just downloading the app automagicly would be cool.
I only do a few things to my stock KDE, 1)dark theme 2)1 panel on the left cuz my screen is wide 3)install a few of my favorite apps. 4) No timeouts, no auto screen locks. Does a standard set of plugins for Firefox count? Setting up my email account in Thunderbird?
I’m not what one would call a “user” by any means. I was just tired of Microsoft and their practices.
And I’ve had very little need for any kind of customization as the people behind my distro have pretty much seen to everything a “dumb dumb” like me need it for.
Plus, I like that I can find solutions for most of the small problems I might find with a quick internet search. And if that fails, there’s multiple forums where I can ask for help.
It’s been a most welcome change.
So thank you, Linux Wizards.
“And I’ve had very little need for any kind of customization as the people behind my distro have pretty much seen to everything”
I think that’s one of the key points (and Nick kinda quickly passed over it) – the Linux desktop environments have constantly iterated over options and changes that customization at this point is more a matter of showing off rather than being a necessity to make things workable or usable
i call them greybeards since that’s what they were called in decades past and i’m old now. lol
i learned from a similar youtuber & survey that older (aged 45+) linux users tend to not bother ricing their installations and now i wonder if we’re a majority of linux users out there because of this video.
When I tried to customize my DE I’ve always ended up with distracting colors and unclear interface. I’ve learned that built-in dark theme is all what I need
the dark themes work for me too and that’s mostly because i use to HEAVILY customize my own x-windows; i created a LCARS interface at the highest extent and destroyed it by accident.
I do not care for customization. What I care for is consistency. So whatever distro I choose, I always install the stock kde and leave it like that.
same here and that’s what i was getting at; both of these polls are making me thing that linux users are trending older and don’t care about those customizations.
I’m still 34. Does this make me old?
- as a human: no
- as a computer: yes
