Yeah, it’s not really clear at this point. From Wikipedia:
In early Peanuts strips, Charlie Brown was not Snoopy’s owner (as seen in the February 2, 1951, strip), and it was not made clear who, if anyone, his actual owner was. At various times, it was suggested that he was Patty’s or Shermy’s dog. Charlie Brown was first portrayed as being responsible for Snoopy in the strips of November 1 and 3, 1955; it was not until September 1, 1958, that Snoopy was specifically said to be Charlie Brown’s dog. (In the September 20, 1980, strip, Charlie Brown comments that he once told Snoopy to “stay” and “he never went home”.)
Sorry for the late reply!
Yeah, that’s pretty interesting. I read a bunch of early strips via little paperbacks that used to be a popular reprint form, but I think I only remember… 1-2 of the ones shown here.

That works for me, except for the alternate timeline in which… I think via the specials (and maybe even some strips), CB’s family specifically heads over to a puppy farm and purchases Snoopy that way, having to choose amongst his ~11 siblings, or something like that.
Actually I’m pretty cool with the strip reality being different from the TV specials’ reality. It’s a pretty honest ‘two timelines’ kind of thing, based on specific & various limitations. You know, different from the Marvel-DC practice of inventing dozens of different universes so that they never really have to kill off a character that might be useful sales-wise one day. 🙄
Snoopy seems to have kind of an odd relationship with CB here, altho maybe this came before he became CB’s alleged pet?

I commented a while back showing some instances where it’s not really clear:
