Living in Melbourne almost all of the left wing political movements I’ve seen in my daily life revolve around support for Palestine, womens issues and broadly anti trump/ All cops are bad. The only one of these that directly applies to Australians is women’s issues and none of them directly apply to men.

You know what young men want. They want to buy a fucking house so they can move out. I swear to god all the men I’m friends with primary political concern is the cost of living. Guess what? The liberals in Melbourne are advertising on the housing crisis. If they get in they’ll actually do shit fuck all about it but, when the messaging you are getting is “free Palestine, women’s rights and ACAB” from the left and from the right its “were gonna make it easier to get a house” guess which way the men who can’t afford fucking houses are gonna go

Beyond that, identity politics stopped being just minorities and has become part of white male politics.

It’s not “surprise polling” when it’s been literally happening everywhere for the last two or three years…

Stop falling for it. You will never be the man in the chair. You will all be converted into overstressed, overworked, wage slaves. If you need proof I’ll post my eye bags in the comments.

One aspect that doesn’t get discussed enough is how effective their grassroots in predominantly young, male hobby spaces has become.

20 years ago, if you weren’t that interested in politics, you wouldn’t get much of it. Currently though, it has thoroughly infiltrated spaces like athletics and gaming. This was not an accident. They have a strong ground game, it just operates in spaces we’re unaccustomed to thinking about in reference to politics.

From the party who brought you “Keep your politics out of my [X]” it’s incredible how much time and effort they put into forcing politics into every fucking thing. Can’t play a video game, can’t watch YouTube, can’t watch the actual TV, can’t listen to a podcast, can’t even walk my dog down the goddamn street in my own neighborhood without being slapped upside the head six times with Reich-wing bullshit.

I can’t comprehend how this can in any way be construed as confusing… or unexpected, surprising, or unanticipated. The discourse vacuum is being filled by right wing misogynists.

Literally just be a vocal presence and the left will increase their ability to be recognised by 1,000%. If 10% of that results in a leftward political shift in the demographic - that will change lives.

I learned a lot about that from Maria Ressa. They tested the “fast media” pushing people to the right in the Philippines, it worked, now they did it in the US. She was on the Weekly Show podcast with John Stewart, it was pretty interesting

        Reading an interview with her

And if you do not hold the line at this crucial moment — this is the moment when you are strongest — it will only — you will only get weaker over time. And it isn’t just the journalists, because journalists are the front lines in this, but the question is to every single citizen in America.

I don’t think it can be described as surprising. It’s a consequence of the dominant narrative placing men as exclusively aggressors, rather than also victims of the patriarchy.

I agree - and it’s also a language problem. Many of the words that nowadays are core parts of the left wing message can easily be portrayed as hostile to them due to their historic genesis and literary meaning~

A simple vocabulary update would help a huge amount, simply switching to more gender neutral terms that carry a sufficiently equivalent meaning. Feminism -> Gender Equality; toxic masculinity -> misogyny + internalized sexism; patriarchy -> oligarchy + egalitarianism etc.

This has become a huge weakness that can be (and frequently is) exploited to portray it as hostile towards these groups.

Did they mention race at all? I might’ve missed it. Bet that would yield more “surprising” results
