WASHINGTON (AP) — In a feat of determination, New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker held the Senate floor with a marathon speech that lasted all night and into Tuesday night, setting a historic mark to show Democrats’ resistance to President Donald Trump’s sweeping actions.
Booker took to the Senate floor on Monday evening, saying he would remain there as long as he was “physically able.” It wasn’t until 25 hours and 5 minutes later that the 55-year-old senator, a former football tight end, finished speaking and limped off the floor. It set the record for the longest continuous Senate floor speech in the chamber’s history. Booker was assisted by fellow Democrats who gave him a break from speaking by asking him questions on the Senate floor.
Inspiring.
Democrats need to keep doing stuff like this often and regularly. But I fear they’ll just take the rest of the year off….
I can’t wait to see all the senators that asked 5 minute questions take a victory lap for participation.
It was a team effort. Cory did the heavy lifting, but it takes a village to overthrow a tyrant.
For sure.
I just expect to be disappointed by many of them taking a victory lap and then doing absolutely nothing else.
What I’d love to see is many of them taking turns doing the same at more opportune times (if not setting records). Make Republicans worry about bringing their bags of shit to the floor. Grind the bastards down. Constantly.
He is current winner, but it is another win. The previous record holder was a Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond and the record was for filibustering Civil Rights Act, so I’m glad that Booker beat him.
It was a privilege to watch a person of color blow past the racist Strom Thurmond.
Truly impressive, but I’m so jaded that I dont believe anyone in the US government (except a select few) want to actually stop what’s happening.
I managed to catch the end - amazing he was lucid and charismatic and compelling after doing that for 24 hours. I supported it symbolically but didn’t guess at motives. But when I saw it, it came off as a sincere, genuinely convincing and energizing act.
I was even more amazed when I learned they can’t leave the podium the entire time. No food no bathroom no nothing
Will it rally anti-Trump resistance?
Depends on how you define it.
Chuck Schumer Democrats?
No.
No it won’t.
I would love to see an extended reading of Nate the Snake or similar at one of these.
Yet another Black man is the one stepping up to save this mess of a country. Thank you.
