Across the country, hospitals under financial strain are shuttering their delivery units, putting expectant mothers at greater risk. As Trump’s cuts to Medicaid take effect, these “maternity care deserts” will only grow.

And the reason for this is that these same people voted for anti abortion republicans who passed strict abortion laws.

Then the doctors all left, because they didn’t want to have to sit and watch their patients die from complications during pregnancy.

This was a self inflicted wound.

This long predates the reversal of Roe v. Wade

The fundamental issue is America’s crumbling healthcare, which is a result of the private healthcare system

The single most impactful event that led to this was the gutting of the ACA in 2008

This happens even in states that have enshrined abortion in their constitution, like Montana. Where I lived in Montana we had to drive 2.5 hours one way for the nearest maternity center. It may absolutely be the case that abortion bans are causing these maternity centers to close in many areas, but where I lived it was happening because the rising costs of Healthcare, and the costs to entice doctors to “the frontier”, were too high for keeping the local (and quite poor) population safe and healthy

      Edit: https://www.npr.org/2024/02/29/1235084997/montana-judge-declares-3-laws-restricting-abortion-unconstitutional

      https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/mt-supreme-court/1489482.html

This is the law that protected access to abortion

Bullshit. It was only legal as of 2025. Before then the republican were harassing the doctors into leaving. And they have been trying to overturn the amendment from the day it was passed. Nobody is going to hang around during that kind of harassment.

guessing doctors are not likely to work in such rural or red states, unless they are paid bank. i read on other platforms that doctors have to be paid bank to fly to a red state to work there temporarily.

With the way the rural population votes in the US, the less they procreate, the better.

A slow reduction of the overall human population by a few billion over the course of a couple generations would have a positive impact on the planet. Not the first method I would suggest to get there, but hey, let’s take what we can get.
