I’ve come across some inactive communities on instances other than mine. A few I’ve thought would be worth restarting but I’m not sure how this works on Lemmy.

Alternatively, I thought about starting a new community under the same theme and growing a community there but, again, I am not sure if everyone is free to start a community or if it is something that you have to gain approval of your instance first.

Are there any official or unofficial rules about starting a community? Do you have to get the support of your instance first or can you just start one? I can imagine someone wanting to start two or three different themed communities and the instance the user uses having different opinions about hosting one or the other: Being very happy about one but very opposed to another. And keeping an array of profiles on different instances just to avoid upsetting one instance or another wouldn’t be ideal.

Unofficial? Don’t do what that person said. Follow the advice of others and request the dead community.

      Officially? No.

I found that most dead communties’ moderators are also MIA. Kinda tough to request a dead community when nobody’s answering…

Every instance can do as they please. Check the current instance where the community is hosted. Or just start a new one on a different instance…
