First of all, it’s paywalled, I can’t read a thing. The text would be appreciated. A bit long so I’m just sharing an archive link that works (recent ones don’t seem to) https://web.archive.org/web/20150505185403/https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/russia-fsu/2014-08-18/why-ukraine-crisis-west-s-fault

Fuckall changed in 8 years between this and the outbreak of the SMO and the 3 years since. The histories will write how this hegemony played with the fate of yet another nation and had no scruples about tossing their toy to the flames for the sake of their endless ambitions.

The fact that what the outcome would be was well understood back in 2014 is what makes the whole thing so frustrating. It’s not like nobody could’ve predicted how this would play out. It’s that ideologues within the US actively marginalized and excluded experts from the discussion so that they could get their proxy war.

I think they overestimated what effect the loss of nordstream and western trade would have and the efficacy their vassals armed by NATO while underestimating Russia’s other partners and their industrial and military capacity.

The incorrect assumptions are different every time but it’s always bourgeois leadership puffing their own fumes.
