An American Werewolf in London. I liked it! One of the darker horror comedies I’ve ever seen while also having some fun jokes, some cool effects, and a nice soundtrack
This week we watched The Wind that Shakes the Barley with Cillian Murphy about the Irish resistance and the birth of extremism in that space, which feels completely justified but also unreasonable, in the movie, it did a good job illustrating the struggle and balancing both reasonable but opposite perspectives
The Legend of Hei (2019)
If Flow wasn’t adorable enough for you, this film will surely fulfill that itch whilst incorporating more (traditional) story-telling elements. The artistic choice of melding classic and modernity was enjoyable though I wish it was more detailed during the finale. This is the latest “cat movie” I’ve watched in recent weeks and I unabashedly adore this the most.Mickey 17 (2025)
Written and directed by Bong Joon Ho of Parasite fame, one can’t help but expect something greater than what Mickey 17 delivers. The premise is interesting and is suitably absurd but the great tragedy of it all is nothing is explored leading to missing profundity resulting in an average film.Moana 2 (2024)
Moana 2 is everything you come to expect from Disney, a safe, family-friendly film in a familiar cookie-cutter mould that doesn’t enthral nor fully disappoints. Its mediocrity permeates throughout the entire movie including each of its musical numbers.Venom: The Last Dance (2024)
I remember watching Venom and although average, it was fun and the humour between the symbiote and Hardy was there. The latest Venom has a quarter of the fun and the humour all fell flat. I do need to draw attention to Juno Temple as the constant bulging-eyed stare on her expressionless face was absolutely jarring every time her character was on screen.been on a noir kick: rebecca, double indemnity, angels w dirty faces, niagara & the postman always rings twice.
It was alright.
I watched Fassbinder’s World on a Wire. It’s an older West German made-for-TV movie, maybe my first Fassbinder. It was a really interesting film and concept, very ahead of its time, but I kept falling asleep through it. I had to split it between four nights. I’m not sure if it’s something about how it was filmed or just me. I think I was just tired.
I watched Wicked! The visuals were better in the theater, but it was still amazing! Can’t wait for part 2 to come out later this year!
I watched the recent d&d movie and I actually loved it. It could easily enjoyed if you’re not into Neverwonter as a setting already but there are some great references and nods to players that made it especially fun.
Hopefully despite it’s poor ticket sales they get to refine their take on the property. It is by no means perfect but it has decent pacing for its long runtime the cast is very solid and the creators have an obvious love of ttrpgs.
I got caught up with the John Wick series, watched 3 and 4.
I kind of wish these movies had more actual plot to them, despite really appreciating how well put together the fight choreography is, and the general evolution of gun-fu in film due to the influence of these films.
All the major characters in these movies say the only thing John Wick is good at is being a killer, and each movie seems intent to just… prove that. There’s no nuance, no growth from characters, just an endless stream of killing by Mr. Wick. It’s hard to believe Wick’s character even ever actually had a wife… It all feels empty and performative, none of it feels sincere… Because we’ve never been shown Wick being tender like the “loving husband” he wants to be remembered as. We’re only shown the cold killer everyone keeps telling him he is and that’s the only thing he will ever be. Seems like the filmmakers agree.
Sure, that can be fun… to en extent… but fuck me John Wick 4 was nearly three fucking hours of almost nonstop on-screen fights with nary a moment for character development or any true feeling of depth for any of the characters. I feel nothing for any of them because I know so little about any of them. There wasn’t time for me to get to know any of them well enough to care about them at all. If characters who made it through to the end of the film had died instead… I would not have felt any great loss, just as I felt no great loss for the ones who did die.
Also, let’s be real, naming the blind guy “Caine” was just a little fucking on the nose, was it not?
Anyway, these films could really do with some tension other than “Wick continues his murder spree” because the complete absence of character development does the rest of the quality filmmaking a disservice. The choreography and cinematography are top tier, but to be endlessly paired with such weak writing is disappointing. I know they are just action movies, but come on give me something to hold onto other than just violence.
I did like seeing Jason “Heynong Man” Mantzoukas in Part 3.
This is also one of my favorite movies.
