This picture looks very 70s.
There was a story I read about the first woman either going up in space. Basically NASA scientists were all excited but it occurred to them that they needed to ask her how many pads and tampons she needed in a cycle.
She answered the question honestly and the scientist did the math. Accounting for backups and “in case something goes wrong” they calculated something like 5 times what she requested for what was essentially a short mission.
Iirc she found it endearing because they cared enough about her welfare (and to ensure mission success) that the scientist devoted time and resources to make sure that she had something that only she would need.
We’ve gone from that to not wanting people to even know she existed.
Quick side note: I did a quick search and apparently there are parts of the story that have been exaggerated and changed and the details have been lost to history. However, the care, and humor, are true and still makes the point.
Yeah. When real scientists are either A) already fired, B) Soon to be fired, or C) having their academic institutions threatened with funding pulls if they don’t fall in line and so live in fear of being fired, the whole stunt was INCREDIBLY tone-deaf and honestly just makes me more angry. I might have brushed it off if it’d happened last year…but THIS year? It’s more like a punch in the gut. Women’s rights are being GUTTED, women are being fired simply for being women–and you’re trotting off to space? In THIS political environment? Fuck off. You should’ve backed out and put your money where it would do people more good right now.
I wish SO MUCH that more performers would follow Dolly Parton’s example. She’s made no bones about getting plastic surgery and such done (that oft-paraphrased line that it “takes a lot of money to look this cheap”)–but then she also turns around and invests in her local community. Because she grew up poor and remembers and wants to help.
And if people HAVE to be space-tourists…would it kill anyone to send a fucking AUTHOR? Someone who can DESCRIBE, in great detail, all the smells/sounds/sensations, in their books?
With anyone and everyone else, the experience of visiting is stuck in their heads. You can’t accurately share what it’s like to be in space via music, the data transfer is too lossy and too vague. And a video/photo only sees the external stuff, it doesn’t share what it feels like inside, or any space-specific details that a trained observer would’ve noticed.
Only an author could deliver something close to the actual EXPERIENCE to the REST of us with any sort of fidelity, because books are the closest we have to telepathy right now. Yet, nobody’s sent a sci-fi author.
Sorry. I’m grumpy. So, so grumpy right now.
NASA did amazing things for teachers. Those are the parts I don’t think this administration wants.
I can be mad about dishonoring women astronauts while not especially caring one way or another about Katy Perry going to space.
I want more people to go to space. And I think it’s good when more than one organization has the capacity to send them. I don’t think billionaires should exist.
Ah, celebritocracy at its best.
That’s because social media algorithms don’t care about those women, and the others’ profession is literally to work the algorithms.
There is a reason for this! It’s not just people being people, it is the design of the internet, with clear culprits one can point to.
How about Mae Jemison: NASA Astronaut and Star Fleet Officer:
Holy crap i forgot about this! Now this should be brought to kids attention and shown what a good roll model is. Instead of the tixtoc and mr.beast crap
She’s a legit badass and a highly worthy role model
that is just Jeff winking at the democrats and hedging his bets just in case Trump goes later and he can say “dont forget I sent a bunch of females to space”
They don’t want to inspire women to be scientists or astronauts, they want to inspire them to be a bimbo who one day can get lucky enough to marry an oligarch that could spend $30 million to get her to space for 10 minutes.
“Remember men, if you can’t get them off, you can always get them into space.”
It took me way too long to figure out what anti-DEI firings had to do with BIOS
I know this is just supposed to be a joke, but I’m pretty sure that the ven diagram of people who called this inspirational and people who support what the Trump administration is doing is just two completely separate circles.
The overlap is “stupid people who fawn over the rich”. There’s a LOT of those
I actually think they overlap.
Women at NASA already accomplished far more than spending $30m for 10 minutes in space. Frankly, calling this inspirational feels insulting.
It’s the woo girl type of feminism. Simulacra of accomplishments are used as simulacra of performative progress. The real issues are glossed over and everyone can cheer for rich women.
Retired Product :(
