    🤞

I think there’s a good chance. He’s shown both parties that the result of him being able to do whatever he wants unchecked will be the crumbling of our alliances and our economy and the steady erosion of all the good things about our country. Even conservatives can see the damage he’s doing.

If there were an election today he wouldn’t even come close to winning. Hopefully those who are responsible for his potential impeachment see that if they allow this to continue they won’t have a shot in their next elections either.

There’s no chance. What he’s doing now is what the Republicans have been trying to do since the 1980s: defund the government, deport immigrants, end legal abortion, roll back LGBTQ protections, etc.

It’s taken them this long to accomplish it because they all knew actually implementing it would be political suicide. But now they have a president who will very happily push it all through, take all the credit for it, and probably won’t even lose that much popularity as his cult of personality lets him get away with way more than most presidents would.

All they have to do is play passive for the next four years and give non-answers every time anyone asks them why they’re not standing up to Trump. Even if the Democrats win Congress and the presidency in 2028, the Republicans have the courts and can block any bill the Democrats pass, making it very difficult to fix Trump’s mess. And they can blame the recession that the next president inherits on that president, giving them a decent shot at 2032.

In short, Republicans have no reason to want to impeach Trump. They can use him as their attack dog to do what they want without getting their own hands dirty.

They have a damn good reason to want to impeach him. He’s threatening the economy and the remainder of our relevance internationally. The Republicans have to live here too. If he yanks down all the load-bearing structures in our house, it’s going to collapse on them too.

Republicans have proven they will never abandon him while they remain in power — Trump will not be impeached (again) or convicted until Democrats return to power.

Despite the defeatist angles that are constantly posted on Lemmy, this is not what I’m seeing from actually reading the news.

Congress could literally be voting to impeach with 90% of the house and senate in support and y’all would still be banging on about how nothing will ever happen. I’m over it.

And when exactly has congress voted 90% on impeachment?

Remind me right before midterms about what happens with impeachment.

I would be surprised if it got that much support, but that’s not the point. The vibes on Lemmy are absolutely terrible and actively cultivating helplessness. There are so many people here who immediately decided we’re all cooked and spend their time trying to demotivate people and push any resistance to admit defeat that it’s absurd. That’s not how you push back, it’s not how you make things better, and it’s literally the kind of shitty helpless attitude that got us into this mess.

Something isn’t right? Don’t take active steps to try to fix it or give your support to anyone who is. Stand on the sidelines preaching this loser shit. We’re all doomed and there’s no point fighting. Don’t run new candidates, just refuse to vote. Don’t create networks of support, tear each other down. Don’t for a second allow a glimmer of hope to go unopposed.

Seriously, how can anyone ever be expected to accomplish anything with that kind of attitude?

I’m honestly starting to think this platform is just as toxic as Reddit or Facebook have ever been, without the help of any shady manipulative algorithm.

Here’s the text of the press release if anyone is blocked for some reason. About damn time.

Today, Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) introduced articles of impeachment against Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, citing a sweeping abuse of power, flagrant violations of the Constitution, and acts of tyranny that undermine American democracy and threaten the rule of law.

“Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy,” said Rep. Thanedar. “His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act.”

The resolution includes seven articles of impeachment outlining a range of constitutional violations:

    1. Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Including denial of due process, unlawful deportations, defiance of court orders, and misuse of the Department of Justice.
    2. Usurpation of Appropriations Power: For dismantling congressionally established agencies and impounding federal funds.
    3. Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression: Including imposing economically damaging tariffs and threatening military invasion against sovereign nations.
    4. Violation of First Amendment Rights: Through retaliatory actions against critics, media, and attorneys exercising constitutionally protected speech.
    5. Creation of an Unlawful Office: By establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) and unlawfully empowering Elon Musk to unilaterally violate the Constitution.
    6. Bribery and Corruption: Involving dismissing criminal cases, soliciting foreign emoluments, and extortionate settlements for personal and political gain.
    7. Tyrannical Overreach: Seeking to consolidate unchecked power, erode civil liberties, and defy constitutional limits on presidential authority.

Rep. Thanedar emphasized that the American people deserve leadership rooted in accountability and integrity, not authoritarianism, saying, “This is not about partisanship. It’s about protecting our democracy and ensuring that no one, not even a President, is above the law.”

Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver, and the Grosse Pointes. As a champion for working families, Shri is committed to advancing economic opportunities, education, healthcare access, and entrepreneurship for underserved communities. Drawing from his journey from poverty to success, he works tirelessly to uplift Metro Detroit, ensuring every resident has the resources and support they need to thrive.

Theory or not, I’d still take Vance over Trump. Both are terrible, but considering it can’t get much worse than this, I’d rather gamble on Vance.

Of course, if Trump does get removed somehow, they’ll just bring him on as an “advisor” and puppet for him anyway.

If this doesn’t go through, impeach him again and more protests. Again and again and more.

In tomorrow’s news: Shri Thanedar has been deported to El Salvador. ICE has claimed he has deep ties to MS13 and is brown.
