People mostly seem to like KDE Plasma more than GNOME, but Ubuntu still seems way more popular. Will Kubuntu ever overtake Ubuntu? Will people ever default to saying Kubuntu instead of saying Ubuntu even when speaking generally about *buntus?

Same questions for other distros like Fedora/Fedora KDE

“Seems” doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Plenty of gnome users just use it. No reason to talk about it and lord it over anything else.

Eh, Ubuntu (definition: can’t configure Debian for us oldies) is just a waystation to better Linux places. It’s saving grace was compatibility to weird and wonderful hardware, ‘just works’. That’s long since been rolled into the kernel, any distro will work with most things.

I gave my kid a bazzite installer when their old motherboard died and they didn’t want to buy M$ again, literally zero issues. Was expecting some, but no, everything they use was fine, or at least they worked it out without my input, proud parent moment. I occasionally give them hints as to how powerful it is, but they don’t care, and that’s great.

I don’t care for Ubuntu myself, but I think it’s disingenuous to paint it as just preconfigured Debian. Honestly, if that’s all it was I don’t think I’d dislike it at all.

Simply no. Canonical always used GNOME and I don’t see that’s changing.

From the user’s point of view, if you discovered KDE you might have discover other distros as well. Kubuntu still be your start point though, or even where you settle.

No. Most distros have their primary DE. Ubuntu uses Gnome. And Kubuntu doesn’t count as a different distro.

I won’t happen. If you prefer KDE you should pick another distro. One that doesn’t have an official DE (Debian, etc) or one gives KDE a primary role (OpenSUSE, etc).

When I say Ubuntu I’m typically talking about the Docker image or a VPS’ (non-desktop) server OS. I don’t want to use Ubuntu as a desktop OS so I’ve never given KDE vs GNOME thought at all.

Using it for years now on my VPS with rootless podman containers and steam game servers. The hardware is moderately dimensioned but it performs very well and is extremely reliable. Never had a borked OS upgrade. Is there any reason you’d advise against it?

Usually it is about the attack surface where more (unnecessary) stuff is running/enabled, the bigger the surface is. Ideally you want as small as possible surface, Alpine is perhaps better in that.

Reducing the attack surface with Gentoo … (I see myself out)

Actually, I use Debian stable on servers by default, only when clients request Ubuntu, I help them admin it. I would never pick Ubuntu for the desktop. Debian and Fedora do a better job being closer to upstream. And: there are snaps which I want to avoid on the desktop.

You don’t have to pretend. Different strokes for different folks. I like KDE, you like gnome. Let’s hope they both prosper and give more people reasons to leave Windows.
