Much fun, but IMO “we’ll burn that bridge when we get to it” is a perfectly valid maxim (yes I’m aware of its roots). YMMV.

Seconded, probably nothing I haven’t heard before, but a good gestalt, helps the pieces fit.
As an aside, Holmes reminds me a lot of Overly Attached Girlfriend (the eyes) crossed with The Square Hole Girl (the ever increasing disappointment with reality not matching expectations). I’m inclined to go with (possibly drug induced and/or psychotic) delusions, at least at the end, although it may have started as a con. Unfortunately that seems fairly par for the course with CEO types in late stage capitalism.

Linux@programming.dev•will Kubuntu ever be considered the default over Ubuntu?English
3·3 days agoEh, Ubuntu (definition: can’t configure Debian for us oldies) is just a waystation to better Linux places. It’s saving grace was compatibility to weird and wonderful hardware, ‘just works’. That’s long since been rolled into the kernel, any distro will work with most things.
I gave my kid a bazzite installer when their old motherboard died and they didn’t want to buy M$ again, literally zero issues. Was expecting some, but no, everything they use was fine, or at least they worked it out without my input, proud parent moment. I occasionally give them hints as to how powerful it is, but they don’t care, and that’s great.
Remember also Limelight. Better living via Chemistry.
I too enjoyed Grimm. How old is this idea?
Nice.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Optimists of Lemmy, what gives you hope about the future?English
1·4 days agoWouldn’t it be good to just do it once. Damn, and it can be done, just not enough of a revenue stream. FU corpos. What we need is a bunch of people burning that model by just making good things that last near forever (what can we do now) and moving on to the next thing.
Do it once, do it right, move on. Not just pretty words.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Optimists of Lemmy, what gives you hope about the future?English
4·4 days agoIn general the last few centuries of history have been two steps back, three forward. Slavery (as a legal concept, not wage slavery) gone, or at least mostly unacceptable in many places. Automation meaning everyone has to work less (but you need a job to survive, the dream of an ever lessening work week has been squashed).
Hell, there’s actually a chance this upcoming generation might do more than just react violently against the absurdly Orwellian culture emerging (that’s OK, guillotines are appropriate) and perhaps have some coherent future trajectory.
OK, this was fairly pessimistic, but overall I believe humanity can overcome the capitalistic bullshit. Climate change will likely require it, cause for optimism, yay!

3·4 days agoPeople were talking about games going off (saleable, owned) discs and saying it’s coz discs degrade and I got to post this
Eh, that’s just the shitty organic medium they cheap out with. Metal dyes (M-Disc Blurays are 100GB good for 100 years, fine even for modern games) are great, shame they’re artificially expensive.
Newer glass or quartz optical discs with femtosecond lasers are good for 360TB for 100K years (claimed) in a similar footprint. See also M$ sitting on ‘Project Silica’ for most of a decade.
Shame corpos don’t want the CD burning revolution to happen again, just imagine what sneakernet would be like if you could fit all of Netflix in the palm of your hand burned on a USB peripheral.
I really like the utopian possibilities currently available, just needs a bit of capitalist kicking to flower.

Australia@aussie.zone•The museum I volunteer at has been seized by the NSW government and they intend to destroy itEnglish
0·4 days agoBest of luck.
I (volunteer and they didn’t use it, oh well, board does it’s own thing, I had fun) made a guide app for the QLD maritime museum a few years back (let’s all dox) who have managed to weather a few assaults over recent years. Being in an actual dry dock has given them an inertia that has so far overcome being prime southbank real estate, but it’s unlikely to last forever. Possibly being seaworthy and mobile may be an advantage.
Can’t quite make sense of the destroy it aspect, seems like there may be a dick and/or an ego involved, in which case you may also weather it, seems easier to not destroy. QMM manage with a few not so (although they think so) influential social types and low grade social support. Take a step back and try to see objectively where the threats are, find weakness (it’s likely a bunch of people willing to shout).

Thanks, it’s time I left anyway?
Oh, survey, stupid but who cares.
