Several weeks back (maybe a little more) there was a spate of posts about some USian revealing that whatever agency he worked for have just invented a guy that they claimed led some movement in West Asia (might have been a Palestinian movement) and that they spent years writing articles where they just attributed statements to him even though he didn’t exist.

I cannot, after hours of searching, find ANY article like this. Was it debunked and scrubbed? Is it just my search-fu is weak? Can anyone help me find it?

No, it was a guy saying that “we” made up an officer or a general in some group (Palestinian Authority? Hamas? Houthis? Iraq?) and that they just attributed statements to him for years and years. Any time they needed a statement from that group, they just used this made up name.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Ex State Dept? Ex CIA? Could have been Reuters or AP for all I know. It was a boomerish white dude, white facial hair I think. I remember seeing the picture of him speaking at a microphone. Weird thing was he was standing? Like he was doing a speech at an event? It’s so frustrating that like 90% of content is screenshots of text that I can’t seem to search. And I feel like I saw the post on the lemmyverse at least 5 times.
