This guy became a billionaire during the dot com bubble by tricking Yahoo into buying his fake website. I’m not aware if he’s ever actually had a job.
Seems like he was a bartender before working as a software salesman, then founding a competing software sales company which he sold.
Broadcast.com was definitely a bad buy for Yahoo, so he lucked into becoming a billionaire off of that, but calling it a fake website might be overstating it - there seems to have been some actual real-time media technology innovation going on there.
It was a comically malfunctional unmonetized “college basketball radio” website (as far as I remember). No way it is was worth jack shit, let alone the hundreds of millions that Yahoo got swindled into paying.
It was absolutely not worth the money that Yahoo paid, no.
