I was a active user on the r/tools subreddit. But today age certification was forced. Ik don’t feel comfoygiving ID or photo to some company.
Are there more people joining from r/tools? Feel welcome and make this out new home. Lets make this active.
removing old reddit and hiding it behind a login , if you used within 6months is another nail in the coffin, they are eventually moving to a login only site, if you want to view any content, so no lurking.
I don’t know how active I’d be as a poster, but I do love me some tools!
I switched to Lemmy a few years ago and a tools community is the one I’ve missed the most. Every other group has at least a handful of active users, except this one.
Remember, that sub described the people, not the objects.
So many posts were just suburban douchenozzles bragging about buying new stuff but never actually using anything. Also, people buying old bench vices and then polishing or painting them to be so perfect, you could not actually use them. Its like they wanted to cosplay a laborer so they started decorating a set for a movie.
I really hope that shit just stays there where it belongs.
they are probably dropping alot of money for the latest too too. i heard theres a similar thing with cameras/camera lens. people are dropping a couple grand because they saw someone using thiers or bragging about it, its usually the most shallow people too.
I love making old tools pretty again, but I’m not putting an ounce of effort into something I’m not going to use or sell. If I’m selling it, it’s going to be practical or I won’t start.
If y’all make this an active community, it looks like the existing moderator is inactive, so to folks here: You should consider volunteering to moderate if the need arises.
I’m gonna keep an eye out on this community to see if you all make it a thing, and if you do, I’ll see if the current mod is active (but they haven’t said anything in a few years - this is a common issue on lemmy and we’re used to fixing it).
Just wanted to stop in and say hello - and hope to see another community take off again. I’ve seen several like this - someone makes a thread, people pop up and start contributing. It’s a beautiful thing to watch. :) And I’m here to support y’all if it happens.
Just joined my local tool library so I can check out tools as part of my membership. Anything I should be doing this fall to clean up for the winter? Any excuse to play with tools
i just collected the last of my tools from my former job. it’s nice to have everything together again. it’s no good to turn around to grab the whatever and realize it’s sitting in the toolbox at work.
Another user chiming in!
I will sub as I like a good tool.
Booo for making another community on Lemmy.world though :( everyone is just centralising to another shit hole.
what’s wrong with lemmy.world?
Aside from centralising all these communities that goes against the whole point of creating a federated eco system where all the main communities aren’t controlled by the same people and if one server goes down it isn’t all gone.
The admin team are Zionist pricks who have a history of making big decisions (such as blocking entire instances) with no transparency or community involvement. Defend admins when they make terrible decisions thus aligning themselves with those decisions as well as coordinated discrimination of users they don’t like or who are hold an opinion they don’t agree with, particularly in news comms.
It became the largest instance, so there is some lemmy.world defaultism out there. Some people attribute spam that happens everywhere to the biggest instance. All problems must have a source.
Not that any instance is perfect, mind. But imho, there’s nothing significant wrong with lemmy.world - or many other instances.
I didn’t make anything. This is a already existing community.
Fair enough :)
I would also join a tools community. I love talking about tools. I haven’t seen one though.
Good news, you’re in one now!
Bad news, it’s brand new so you’ll have to post your own content.
Nice! Welcome.
Hrm recent tool experiences. A friend got me a new pruning saw. Dang that thing’s sharp!
Some cycling specific tools (and parts) on the way to help rebuild my old mtb.
Storage is what’s killin me currently. New garage and nothing’s set up nicely yet. Carp everywhere
Carp everywhere
Sounds like you need to make friends with some fishermen!
I’m in the same boat. Just moved into a place and the garage has a lot of work to be set up. I had been at my last place for six years, so everything was well established. Different space, different configuration, different mindset… I had to get axles on my project to get it rolling before the move, so the moment that was done, it was a rush to throw everything into boxes and get it all to the new place. It has not helped me on this end, but it is all here and I’ve been slowly going through everything to get it where it needs to be for whatever project or job I’ve got to do.
I left reddit years ago, and am not familiar with the sub, but what’s it about? Are you going to tell me that my craftsman c3 19.2volt batteries are to old, lol. Because I’m amazed every time I need to use them and they still charge and work for the small tasks I ask of them. I must have got them between 2006-2008 maybe?
To be honest, we don’t have Craftsman in Europe. So just use what you have as long as it works.
Actually I bought I a 1/3 horsepower craftsman garage door opener for my father and helped him install it because my mother didn’t trust him to do it when i was 16 (says a lot about my mother’s trust of her husband) but that was more than 20 years ago now. Garage door has to be rated for 175mph (281kph) winds because they live in Florida for building codes. Never had an issue since.
Craftsman tools used to be great years ago, and sold by a company called sears “now bankrupt” but basically had a policy that was if you bought a wrench of x size and it broke, they would replace it without a receipt with the same or newer model they sell now. Them battery powered tools came out and they obviously had to change their policies, but still non electric tools was the same. 9mm socket, bring in the broken one, no questions
And you had a damn good chance of never needing to use their warranty. Their wrenches in particular were beast mode. My socket set was a gift from my grandparents back in 93 or 94, and every socket and both wrenches are perfect. Well, a little bit of grease in the grooves of the lettering, but they keep cranking along over the decades with no issues at all same with the standard wrenches I bought myself not long after.
I’ve hammered on the big socket wrench trying to break stubborn bolts back when I was too young to do the smart thing and work at it patiently. Didn’t even dent the bugger, much less bend it.
My dad’s screwdriver set is even older and other than the handles showing chips and dings, are fine.
Craftsman was the absolute most reliable brand back before the company got gutted.
Worked outdoors at Lowe’s, but the indoor section had Craftsman outdoor gear at the low end.
sucks we can’t keep making stuff like that for some reason.
