So Japan gets a few things right, IMO, about time. We don’t do daylight saving. Places that stay open past midnight will list hours like ‘20:00 ~ 26:00’ to indicate closing at 2am which I feel pretty neutral about. We’re in the wrong timezone in my opinion and at least eastern Japan should move to UTC+10 or even UTC+11 so it’s not getting light at 3-something in the morning in summer.

However, the thing that drives me nuts is watching TV and it suddenly going to 0:00 at noon. Why?! This is doubly true for those who go 11 -> 0 -> 13 instead of 11 -> 0 -> 1. It’s completely irrelevant to anything in my life, so definitely just mildly infuriating to me. Maybe people with shiftwork schedules and blackout curtains might have some confusion.

Japanese broadcasting and newspapers usually use a modified 12-hour notation in which midnight is 午前0時 (0 am) and noon is 午後0時 (0 pm) [. . .]

    23, 24, 25, 26:00 makes sense.
    23, 00, 01, 02:00 makes sense.

    11, 12, 13:00 makes sense.
11, 12, 01:00 strange to me, but ok fine.

11, 00, 13:00 is just psychopathic. Japan is not a place I’d expect this from.

I have bad news for you about all kinds of things in Japan that are the way someone decided and now is impervious to thought, criticism, and change because reasons.

0:00 PM makes a heck of a lot more sense than 12:00 PM. But there is no excuse for using it in an otherwise 24-hour system! I’m so sorry you have to tolerate such insanity.

12 makes sense to me and I prefer 24-hour-time but, yeah, the lack of the consistency is the maddening part to me.

Is midnight 0:00 as well? So two 0:00 on a 24 hour system?

          Yep. … 11, 0, 13 … 23, 0, 1

Some places will mark AM/PM (午前・午後), but some don’t which makes it more odd.
