Hunting for sport and trophies is bad, but hunting for meat is a hell of a lot more ethical than industrial meat production. Interestingly I’ve known people that were Vegan due to the ethics of commercial animal handling, but were also hunting and would eat meat from animals killed in the hunting team.
I live in Sweden and hunting is pretty common here, even though I’m not personally involved. There are limits on when and how many animals you may shoot and when to make sure the population is healthy.
Yeah, I would actually
This is the most cursed thing I’ve seen in a long time

Not really. Maybe the smallest models could work but they are severely limited in their capabilities. Depending on your use case it might be enough though, but not if you expect to be able to run general purpose tasks or code generation.
At the end of the day there is a reason the AI companies are building such massive datacenters. The cost of the highly capable models is massive compute and RAM requirements, and the commercial options are going to be quite far behind the proprietary models.
An option if the main reason is to avoid US tech companies could be to find a vendor that sells hosted open AI models. There are quite a few hosting providers that offer model as a service options. For instance Scaleway, StackIT, Evroc, OVH, and probably more. (It’s not like they magically don’t need datacenters though)
A lot of good replies here but yeah, the Fediverse isn’t really designed for Privacy at all. Apart from that of course everything you post is public and distributed to other servers, something that is less obvious is that so is your votes. This is data that absolutely can reveal a lot about you and your interestes and it’s also distributed to all instances that participate in a thread, and visible to admins, or anyone through sites like https://lemvotes.org/
Some data is a bit more protected, as you mention the email address would only be made known to your home instance. Same applies to your IP address. Chat / Direct Messages are also fairly private, but not end-2-end encrypted so it will be available to admins of your home instance and the instance of the users you’re sending a message to.
At least instances are not ad-funded (at least I haven’t seen anyone running ads), so it’s less likely that your browsing pattern is also sent to some ad network to build a personalized profile… That said, circling back to the votes being distributed to all instances it also wouldn’t be that hard to build profiles on users.

I genuinely don’t understand what you mean. Are you saying that people should be outraged that coffee shops like Starbacks charge a lot more than if you brew your own coffee?
Why should anyone give a fuck? It’s not like anyone is forced to buy coffee. The alternative is to simply do it yourself so just do it.
If you appreciate the convenience of getting a coffee on the go prepared by someone then yeah, it is going to be more expensive. After all someone has to be paid to do that for you, and maintain the facilities, equipment, etc.

OP is coming off pretty hostile in a lot of the replies on this post… Maybe the issue isn’t the opinions that are getting censored, maybe they’re getting banned because people (and mods) think they’re a bit of an ass.

As everyone else in the thread, yes, but at least it’s a bit more limited… as in, you’ll run out of content quicker.
I think the Fediverse shows that it’s not only algorithms that push sooner content; the core issue is humans. We’re a lot more likely to share and like/upvote something that upsets, and some days I think that is very noticeable on here…

Imo still worth reminding people that just because you run an apt/dnf upgrade
running applications still map the now unlinked outdated version.

Anecdotal, but I researched something similar for a job I had almost 10 years ago. Next to the office we had a pretty big datacenter, which I know had ”district cooling”, so I wondered if this was fed back into the district heating network somehow?
Turn out no, mainly because the local thermal power plant is already fed into the district heating network, and that already produces was more east heat than nessecary to provide heating in the city.
Eventually they did an expansion and I was told the district cooling was scrapped in favor of local ”free cooling” units. Basically just dumping the waste heat directly to the air (This works in the right climate, so like not in Arizona or Texas)

Im okay with it tbh. The everything must be free on the internet mindset is what led ads working its way in everywhere.

At least it sounds like the 9.0 ones only affect systems that are running SMB Direct, which sounds like a pretty niche setup

How is this even possible btw? Doesn’t the private key have to match the public key? Surely this would have been noticed earlier if it had a short public key as well?

That kind of is the proper way to handle this. You don’t want to hint bad actors where to look and give people some time to update.
How well will HDR formats work on Linux these days?
