  • I’ve been loving my frame, but I didn’t realize how much I needed those prescription lenses in there. I just ordered them for about $60. I was going to get a smaller pair of glasses that would fit in the headset, then I remembered seeing the lenses on the store page.

The ergo kit was out of stock unfortunately, but I can’t say it’s “mandatory” like some others do. I might buy it when it’s back in stock, but I’m not in a rush as it feels alright as-is.

The fanny pack is interesting, but I think I’d rather just get a long cable and tether to a wall. Maybe I’ll feel differently after some extended use.

  • I have very little soldering experience, but every once in a while at work I have to use a soldering iron to install heat-set threaded inserts into 3d prints.

The little machine that controls the soldering iron only has a power button and knob, and no indication that it is heating up or hot or even working. Each time I use it I convince myself that it isn’t on and have to test it. And each time I briefly consider using my hand. It’s always super hot.

One year, I think I was around 12, I told my family that I thought maybe I was too old to trick-or-treat so I would figure something else out. They were effusive about how wrong I was and unanimously told me absolutely not, I was still a kid and 100% I had to go trick-or-treating.

The next year I assumed I was still young enough, since they were so insistent the last time, so I told them I planned on going again. They all gave me worried looks and said I was clearly too old.

I don’t remember what age it was, but there is an exact age that people find acceptable, apparently. I’m tempted to go out now, many years later, just out of spite.

  • There are some gifts that are good for a lot of people regardless of their interests, but these guides never seem to know any of them and it’s annoying.

For instance everywhere cold that I’ve lived, people would love another heated blanket, even if they already have one. Or really just any blanket, can’t have too many. Also a good evaporative humidifier is something everyone needs and no one has. It took me 15 years to buy a real carpet cleaner for myself, just check their house while you’re over to see if there’s one lying around. Consumable stuff is great because even if they already have it they can use more soon.

Guides ignore this kind of thing and pretty much exclusively recommend stuff that most people wouldn’t like due to tastes. “Get them this clip-on book light!” but they only read on tablets, or they already have a light because that problem needed immediate solving, or they simply don’t like the kind you bought because there are so many.

Anyway the guides are terrible, but they don’t have to be.

  • It snowed pretty hard once in Alabama, and the roads got icy so they cancelled work. Management told us that we would all have to use a day of PTO for this unplanned vacation. I told my boss “Fuck that, I’ll walk to work. You’re not getting my PTO.” and he said “You can’t do that, the building’s locked.”

I was prepared to become an Issue, but the next day they must have realized how illegal that paper trail was because they retracted the PTO thing.

A similar, much more severe storm happened a few years later, and I told my boss that I was absolutely not driving to work in my little sedan. He told me he would come pick me up and that I was a big baby, then shows up sliding around in his Prius with no chains or anything. After barely making it in, no one else was at the office and everything was dark. He made me work the full shift anyway before letting me go home, and HR said they wouldn’t give me any consideration for working a day more than everyone else.
