I have very little soldering experience, but every once in a while at work I have to use a soldering iron to install heat-set threaded inserts into 3d prints.

The little machine that controls the soldering iron only has a power button and knob, and no indication that it is heating up or hot or even working. Each time I use it I convince myself that it isn’t on and have to test it. And each time I briefly consider using my hand. It’s always super hot.

You’re a coward if you can still feel emotional pain after plunging that hot iron into a tangled mess of lead solder, inhaling deeply, and drifting off into the sweet, sweet embrace of saturnine bliss.

You’ll certainly be drooling, so I guess that counts as trickle down, but I very much doubt you’ll have shoelaces. Velcro straps will be much more suitable for where you’re going, weeeeee :)

Putting a soldering iron on a motherboard, using no whick, solder, or fume hood. This is the kind of jobs 90 year old politicians think of when techbros promise high paying tech jobs in their area.

Holding the soldering iron by the hot end is fine, though. That’s how you get a proper Maillard reaction going.

I like 3D printing so I’m studying mechanical engineering, the only problem is that the teacher keeps talking about this “Cauculus” thing and I don’t know what it is but sure it doesn’t mater.

/j actually math is quite a beautiful thing ngl.

Holding it wrong? Check. No solder? Check. No soldering iron stand? Check. No fume filter? Check. No ESD mat? Check. No third hand or other holder? Check. No way to clean the soldering iron tip? Check.

How hard is it to talk to someone that actually does what you want to show and make sure it’s at least a reasonable depiction? Oh wait people are lazy shits and nobody checks anything.

    Right, carry on.

A lot of these are actually good examples of the difference between a hobbiest or a professional. If she just held it correctly and you told me there was a bit of solder somewhere we can’t see, I could very easily believe this was a real photo of a hobbyist.

Most of what you listed are luxuries and conveniences. The one exception is the fume hood, which is a safety concern, but I would say that’s overkill for any hobbyist and maybe even a lot of professionals. A small fan and a reasonably vented/sized room is fine. Heck, I only bother grabbing my fan if I know i’m going to be doing more than ~15 minutes of soldering.

yeah, i just do it in the garage with the door open (only better ventilation in the house is out back by the grill) and use lead-free solder. a third hand and a sponge are enough and my hand will never be steady enough to work with a magnifying lens

I have a $15 USB powered soldering iron and it scares me a bit every time I use it. Nothing should be able to get that hot off of a 5V USBA plug.

This was made by incompetent people for incompetent people. And to be fair, I usually don’t have a fume hod or a third hand either. I usuly worn close to an open window on the rare occasions I solder something. I 100% agree wit the rest though.
