  • Are you using Linux / Wayland? Lately I’ve been having a lot of fun using gtk4-layer-shell in creative ways. Imo a great way to come up with projects that you’ll enjoy and be motivated to finish is to explore something totally novel and see where it takes you. An even better way is to recognize that feeling of ‘I feel like my computer should be able to do X’ and then make it possible. My last project of that variety was a system to stream videos from torrents as soon as possible after the download begins. Can start watching a 10gb video file all the way through in full quality with no buffering after like 30 seconds of downloading if you fiddle with the torrent and analyze the video file as it’s being written. Unfortunately I won’t be releasing this one as I learned that it would be quite bad for swarm health, but it’s cool for personal use.

  • I still write and release open source software projects despite full well knowing they will likely have 0 users and that AI could replicate it in 1% the time I took. Doesn’t matter. I do it cause programming is what I love to do. I think it’s really sad that a lot of people have forgotten that’s the purpose of doing this kind of stuff. It’s not like we were ever gonna see a cent for it anyways. One of my projects was downloaded about 8000 times. That’s nice. Too bad it’s a project I discontinued because I no longer use it. No refunds!

  • I think what they were getting at, or at least what I’M getting at here, is that the problem with statistics is that they forsake the individual. My problem is that despite being sexually abused by two women (and zero men), I’m still viewed as a potential aggressor rather than a definite victim. I am fully divided and my sympathy is, for the most part, reserved for myself.

  • Please not javascript or python. You have the right idea starting with C++ but C might be an even better place to start. 13 is old enough to comprehend the fundamentals. I learned programming on my own by starting at the top and working down, and I really regret it. Starting from the bottom and working up would have made me a much stronger programmer much sooner. I was 10 at the time and I wouldn’t have been able to comprehend it all, but by 13 I would have been able, with a good teacher.

  • I think one of the biggest issues is that nothing is real anymore. 90% of what 90% of us do is utterly meaningless. For the average person, life is entirely solved. Our problems are mostly by choice, be it ours or someone else’s. The only real things in our lives are tragedies that we’d never have been able to prevent or resolve anyway.

An apocalypse is enticing because then our actions would have direct consequences. Right now, the consequences of our actions are filtered and diffused through a trillion layers of bullshit where the positive and negative effects are basically invisible unless you make a ridiculous amount of money very quickly, or like, kill someone with your car.

  • I use gray for this reason, I want to know that it’s on. I also use KDE with hotkeys for manual tiling as I prefer windows to float by default and the window shadows make it a lot easier for me to visually parse what’s on the screen. The shadows would be invisible against a black screen.
