I think it’s more likely that the server buffers it. They have to be aware that any client hack could otherwise easily see them ahead of time.
This also explains the size limit, since it’ll have to sit on facebooks servers for a while.
Sounds like it gets sent to the recipients phones and only displayed at the scheduled time
