I sort of stumbled in to something the other day, and it worked out swimmingly.

I’ll say. Obvious caveat: N=1, but a quick scan, it looks like 4-5x the average upvote number, and maybe 10x the average number of comments!

Might be worth trying it out a few more times, to make sure “oldest known cooking recipes” aren’t some unknown common denominator, but I’ll definitely add it to the guide. If you’re up for it, this may warrant a Fediverse PSA, to get the word out.

to make sure “oldest known cooking recipes” aren’t some unknown common denominator

Yeah, I do think it hit a trifecta of extra interest: 1) fun cooking crossover, 2) fans of Max Miller specifically, 3) actual recipes for people to try. Not every post is going to be like that of course. Some won’t have any noteworthy comments worth including, whereas that one had 3-4 goodies.

Oh, and another thing curation allowed me to do was to improve the post title and general info, which I think helped in this case. The cool thing is that it only took me a few minutes to whip up, compared to other posts where I pretty much built the whole thing by hand, which usually includes a deal of research, reading and image chopping / enhancing. This one from 4wks ago likely took me 30-60min to pull together even though it probably doesn’t look like it:

At my own sub, I’ve sometimes spent hours composing a post, only for it to receive a paltry number of reads / upvotes. But for the popular posts, most usually have a strong engagement hook. An image / title that really pops, potentially followed by more content that resonates.

If you’re up for it, this may warrant a Fediverse PSA, to get the word out.

I’ll keep that in mind. A few more test drives of this method are certainly in order…

… fans of Max Miller …

I had no idea who this was and when I first searched it, all I got was a disgraced US politician. “American YouTuber and historian known for being the creator and host of Tasting History” makes much more sense.

Yeah, I think those’ll definitely be factors in popularity.

That looks about right to me. I could see it being longer, if you went on a deep dive somewhere along the way.

I know that feeling well. It’s not fun :(

        Sounds good :)

Edit: added a space and a comma.
